The public get bored with the same reality shows being thrashed out every year.. the X factor, Strictly Come Dancing, Lets Dance etc and also now the Voice....similar formats, all reality TV shows. Strictly's gone downmarket. it tried going for more and more gimicks and panto, but then retreated into putting in attractive males to win over some younger viewers. Its also gained because X factor jumped several sharks and became nothing to do with good singing.
The problem TV has is that everything has been done before and attempts to make things more dramatic tend to dumb things down and lose the viewers they have. people also seem to be happy watching youtubes of sheep throwing, or doing whatever else they do instead now. Big Brother and the Bill died, the major soaps and the Apprentice, DOI and X factor are losing viewers.Casualty is in need of shock therapy. IAC looks very stale except when they find a really good group. The big shows all have the same problem that most perms have been seen before. There's not much else left - you can''t have even more murder dramas, and even history has now been used for most of its big stories. When anyone does come up with a good new idea its usually followed by lots of clones so it soon becomes over familiar. You can't have ever more shows about the Titanic, the Ripper, Henry V111, department store owners, prisoner of war camps, aristrocratic families with servants, or cooking shows........
DOI could be quite well placed to carry on because it can perm its celebs and it has a vast range of music and stories to perform to, plus a range of moves, and potential tests to be met. Its also got an inherent danger and wow factor that the other shows lack. It has problems because its programmed for too many adverts, and needs time for enough contenders for a good compettion and to fill the schedule, but its already moved to reduce the numbers - which is about all it can do. It doesn't manage to do as well as it should - because it doesn't come up with enough really good routines, doesn't use its pros to provide even better demonstrations, and its judges have lost the plot and spend most of their time criticising the choregraphy, and praising basic skating and dancing skills that are secondary to the show's purpose to entertain. The result is that they now seem to be trying to turn what should be their best and only 3 contender competition into a dull procession for their third unexciting male winner in a row.
