Would you play an Ad funded game?
After discussing the Cloud service last night the discussion lead to ad funding and I just wonder what people on here thought.
If a new game launched and offered an addition way to play for free via ad funding would you play it. So the disc version releases as normal but a download version is also provided which has 3minutes of adverts every time you boot the game and then inserts 1minute worth of adverts upon the completion of a mission / level as well as menu systems having banner ads on them (Or any other scenario you can think of to insert adverts). |

I'd be all for it, if it made the game cheaper
Hell why limit it to games, say the PS4 launched and the cheapest model has relevant adverts every time you boot system for a minute or two, then why not |

Ad funded games work, Runescape is the prime example of this, but it doesn't lend itself well to classic console gaming.
Take a game like Duke Nukem Forever, you can complete it easily in around 8 hours and the multiplayer isn't often used which doesn't give a lot of scope for ads. The only games which would really work are things like FIFA, and COD which do require a fair bit of time investment. I'd rather see demos of games put on Cloud services so people can try before they buy. |

Ads could easily fund games, but why bother when you can just continue to charge gamers for the game, and add the ads anyway. You get more money that way.
Besides, lots of games have had ads in them for a few years now. Some have even been way over the top and actually detrimental to the game. Bad ads in a over the top funny way would be fight night series, game was rammed full of ads. |

I probably would as long as it's done in a decent way such as in urban environments have billboards with real ads on it. I'm sure this will be seen in Blizzard's next one Project Titan for instance. Do it right and it can add to the game. Can even have a wee ad ticker on loading screens.
However, adding 2/3 mins of ads everytime you boot the game/console will not work. Who is gonna sit through them when you can go grab a drink etc while their playing. Unless Microsoft use the kinect to make sure there is someone there lol. Hmmmm, would they? |

I think it depends on how its done. For your example, ads before you start would be ok, but a minute of adds every mission/level/whatever would drive me potty and completely ruin the flow of the game.
I don't mind contextually correct ads and products appearing in game environments as long as its not too in your face. To be honest though, with steam sales and various lower price releases games are pretty affordable at the moment anyway, on PC at least. |

I think its a terrible idea.
Games cost £40, that's more or less the MAX price for a disc based game these days. To me that's acceptable. I would hate Ads popping up through a game !! Can't watch TV without Ads, (except BBC) can't walk down the street without seeing Ads (Bus stops, billboards) can't go to the cinema without watching Ads, can't listen to the radio without Ads, Papers, Magazines..... jeez enough is enough, I DO NOT WANT THEM IN MY GAMES AS WELL. ![]() This idea needs pushing back into its bottle before some money grabbing developer/publisher actually does it. Seriously. It won't lead to cheaper games it'll just be more revenue for the big boys. No I wouldn't play them. |

Pay £40 for full game no ads, or play for free and have ads. The issue is how shorter games are going to get revenue via ads for the very little playtime. |

I don't see the point in adverts. I just ignore them and have no interest in femine hygiene products, Cadbury's chocolate,make-up, alcohol or cars.

Yes you can, Box Sets
![]() This was type of thing I was thinking, Discs still available for the games you really want to play, keep and enjoy properly. Ad funded gaming for those games you don't really want to buy. My Friend loves Fifa, I enjoy the odd game here and there against him but I would never buy a Fifa game. So he could buy and play his disc copy with no adverts as normal then through a system of ad funding I play a free cloud stream with adverts inserted into the game so we get to play against each other, the developers make money from both of us, but as someone who doesn't really like that type of game I don't actually pay anything to play it. |

It would never be that clear cut, where there's money there is greed and I bet my bottom dollar if something like this happened, every game would have ads and we would still end up paying in some way. I much prefer things to stay as they are, we pay up front and own the game, I know its a pain if the game sucks but that's risk we all take, same as going to the pictures if its crap you've lost thst money.

I'd be okay with a company doing this sort of thing for a sports game (although I don't want to give EA any ideas...), since in many ways it would ad realism. Other types of game I'm not so sure.

Yes if they were part of the plot, not if it is a bar along the top or bottom.

Yes if it will help for better servers or help the company make a sequel. I would prefer ads on the xmb though to pay for better servers. I can see ads in ps4 as we will be streaming some things
