Kitten When To Switch To Adult Food
-Batman-

I have a 8 month Bengal kitten that at the moment is still on kitten food but wondering when is it best to switch him onto adult food. I keep hearing different things from everyone when to do it.

I don't know what the current thnking is but kitten and puppy food is quite a recent introduction when we had ours they went straight onto adult food with the addition of milky porridge.

I think the time varies between 6-12 months depending on whose advice you take. It's very variable but the food manufacturers will encourage you to keep up with kitten food until the cat is 12 months old. I think that it probably depends on the cat and what it wants. When I had my kitten 18 years ago I switched at around 6 months old because she didn't really like the kitten food much at the time but there's obviously a much greater selection around nowadays to tempt them. My 2 current rescues came from Cats Protection when they were around 10-11 months old and they were on adult food at that time - I didn't ask for how long.

Kitten food has been around for quite some time - it was certainly well established practice when I took on a kitten 18 years ago and the importance of kitten food has been previously well discussed, particularly when kittens are small.

Yes I hadn't seen it when our last kitty Ginny was a kitten in 1984 so it must have come in some time after that.

I only have kittens on it as long as they eat it or when they can start too pinch the adults food. Sometimes its a hit or miss if they can tolerate adult food though. It's best changed over fabout 10 days adding a bit less kitten food per day

I'm having the same dilemma at the moment, my kittens are 9/10 months old (one is 3 weeks older than the other) and I keep thinking I should start switching them onto adult food. I'm thinking I will buy adult biscuits and mix them in with the kitten biscuits I currently have. Am also going to start buying sachets of adult food and try them out (mixing them in) to see which ones they like.

I thought about doing it at 8 months, asked the vet, and he said that was a bit soon, and that 10 months would be better

Our cats had mashed up adult cat food as soon as they could eat properly and were fine on it.

The boys were 12 months when I changed their kitten food to adult food. This was also recommended by the vets.
