I guess Media Traffic was slightly off with the figures as these differ a little...

Yes, they under estimated Lana Del Rey's sales by 500,000 and Swift's by 1.4 million! But to be fair IFPI's figures are shipped copies and not actual sales to end users. Adele - 21 XL Recordings - 9,2 million copies Taylor Swift - Red Big Machine - 3,8 million copies One Direction - Up All Night Syco Music - 3,6 million copies Lana Del Rey - Born To Die Stranger / Interscope - 2,9 million copies One Direction - Take Me Home Syco Music - 2,9 million copies Mumford & Sons - Babel Glass Note / Island - 2,7 million copies Pink - The Truth About Love RCA - 2,4 million copies Justin Bieber - Believe Island / Def Jam - 2,3 million copies Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto Parlophone / Capitol - 2,2 million copies Maroon 5 - Overexposed A&M / Octone - 2,0 million copies |

I'm not really sure who is right
![]() Wasn't it said that Adele sold 9.2 million copies and that 1D latest album has sold 2.9 million sales? That sounds way more accurate than 4.5 million copies - something is definitely weird here. But you are right - there is a difference between shipments and actual sales, so that might be the reason. |

It all depends on how much over shipped each album is to be honest.

There is quite a big difference with One Direction's sales on Media Traffic and this reported list.
Media Traffic had Take Me Home had sold 2.9m copies in 2012 and a current total as 3.8m, never mind selling 4.4m in 2012 alone! Of course if this is based on shipments that could explain it but then why has Adele lost sales? |

Media traffic use estimated sales as they don't get reports from every country. There's no way anyone can get an accurate figure for every album's worldwide sales unless they get access to the charts of every one of the 206 countries in the world and manually add their exact figures week on week - almost impossible as many countries don't even have official charts. Even Japan which has had official charts for years does not add itunes sales to its charts, and many small countries only report sales when they are large enough to warrant a shiny disc.
For example, no-one really knows exactly how many copies of "Thriller" have been sold. 30 years on it continues to sell worldwide, but there's no mechanism for all its sales to register somewhere week on week... so we end up with wildly disparate sales figures like 50 million and 65 million. |

IFPC are generally regarded as far more accurate than MediaTraffic who dont report on all sales and fail to list smaller markets.

media traffic declares their methodology:
http://www.mediatraffic.de/about-us.htm and they even use IFPC figures to assign points in some countries: Chart Methodologies Album-Chart THE TOP-SELLING ALBUMS ACCORDING TO GLOBAL SALES DATA AND NATIONAL ALBUM-CHARTS OFFICIAL NATIONAL CHARTS FROM USA, JAPAN, UNITED KINGDOM, GERMANY, AND FRANCE WITH REAL SALES DATA OFFICIAL NATIONAL CHARTS FROM CANADA, AUSTRALIA, ITALY, SPAIN, BRAZIL, MEXICO, NETHERLANDS, SWITZERLAND, BELGIUM, SOUTH AFRICA, SWEDEN, AUSTRIA, NORWAY, DENMARK, FINLAND, IRELAND, ARGENTINA, CHILE, COLOMBIA, VENEZUELA, NEW ZEALAND, MALAYSIA, POLAND, PORTUGAL, HUNGARY, CZECH REPUBLIC, SLOVAKIA, GREECE, AND SOUTH KOREA ARE WEIGHTED TO THE SIZE OF ITS MARKETS ACCORDING TO THE LATEST IFPI-STATISTICS (EXCEPTION: ALBUMS WITH HUGH SALES IN THESE COUNTRIES ARE WEIGHTED HIGHER) ALBUMS WHICH PLACED IN MOST OR ALL OF OUR MONITORED COUNTRIES, GET ADDITIONAL POINTS FOR COUNTRIES WHICH HAVE NO OFFICIAL CHARTS LIKE RUSSIA, CHINA, INDIA, TURKEY ETC. |

Mediatraffic isn't using actual sales figures except for in the USA, JAPAN, UNITED KINGDOM, GERMANY, AND FRANCE. The others are simply estimated according to their size of the markets based on the last ifpi-statistics (which change from year to year) AND their chart positions. Quote:

You're a bit strange, trying to put down 1D's sales in every thread possible... Why on earth do the mediatraffic-numbers sound "way more accurate" than the (official) IFPI ones?! Just because Adele has sold a lot more and 1D a lot less? You're just sooo very biased, can't believe it
![]() For starters 2.9 for 1D sales for their 2nd album IS more accurate because they sold only 616K in the UK by the end of 2012... and they sold 1.62K in the US. So that is about 2 million all together. Do you honestly believe that they sold another 2.5 million albums worldwide when UK and US are one of the biggest music markets out there? I'm simply doing the math here and I'm NOT dissing 1D sales. AND AGAIN - IFPI is based solely on SHIPMENTS, not the actual sales - that is a fact. Besides, look at the methodology of Media Traffic, they even include IFPI statistics: THE TOP-SELLING ALBUMS ACCORDING TO GLOBAL SALES DATA AND NATIONAL ALBUM-CHARTS OFFICIAL NATIONAL CHARTS FROM USA, JAPAN, UNITED KINGDOM, GERMANY, AND FRANCE WITH REAL SALES DATA OFFICIAL NATIONAL CHARTS FROM CANADA, AUSTRALIA, ITALY, SPAIN, BRAZIL, MEXICO, NETHERLANDS, SWITZERLAND, BELGIUM, SOUTH AFRICA, SWEDEN, AUSTRIA, NORWAY, DENMARK, FINLAND, IRELAND, ARGENTINA, CHILE, COLOMBIA, VENEZUELA, NEW ZEALAND, MALAYSIA, POLAND, PORTUGAL, HUNGARY, CZECH REPUBLIC, SLOVAKIA, GREECE, AND SOUTH KOREA ARE WEIGHTED TO THE SIZE OF ITS MARKETS ACCORDING TO THE LATEST IFPI-STATISTICS (EXCEPTION: ALBUMS WITH HUGH SALES IN THESE COUNTRIES ARE WEIGHTED HIGHER) ALBUMS WHICH PLACED IN MOST OR ALL OF OUR MONITORED COUNTRIES, GET ADDITIONAL POINTS FOR COUNTRIES WHICH HAVE NO OFFICIAL CHARTS LIKE RUSSIA, CHINA, INDIA, TURKEY ETC. And one more thing - a lot of people here on DS are criticizing 1D and yet, some of you have a problem with me... I have nothing against them, I have said that 100 of times before - I just have the problem of the media who exaggerating their success a lot of times. |

Mediatraffic is two German guys who add available sales together and estimate the rest in their spare time. The site alone should be fairly indicative of how legit it is. IFPI is an official industry report with info gathered from the labels.
Impressed with Lana's sales. She really held her own all things considered. |
