Going for walks with your cat...

My Mitzee comes with me for walks, she'll just walk along side me, or will sometimes run ahead and wait for me to catch up. When I go to the village pub she walks with me and waits outside. I once went and spent an hour and a half in there drinking and when I came outside she was settled on the pavement outside, waiting for me. The pub owners and staff often come outside to see her or sometimes Mitzee will wonder into the pub and have a look round, much to the amusement of the regulars. Have any of you cat owners ever had a cat that goes for long walks with you or follows you places? I think it's really sweet.

Yes mostly in the warmer months the cat will usually follow on an evening walk with the dog. Staying behind a certain distance but coming so far and enjoying the walk before turning back home.

I have done in the Seventies. I am not sure about these days.

He enjoyed his walks and when I went to the park with friends, he would wait until it was time to go home.

A very clever boy. He died aged 17 in 1991.

If i go for a walk about the estate our cat will follow us, but that doesn't happen much.

One of my cats used to come with me for a walk when I visited a neighbour the other end of my road. Sometimes he would come into the house with me and other times he just stayed outside her back door.

Our late 5 used to follow us through the woods when we had our 3 dogs, quite a sight I think as it did used to stop people in their tracks. Wouldn't (even if I had cats) do that now - far too many dangers these days.

Hi cobwebsoup, my first two cats, Sooty and Tab always followed me when I went out. Tab in particular would follow me to the end of my street when I left the house to go to work, at which point I would have to prevent him from going further as I was getting my bus to town. After work, he would be sitting on a wall waiting for me and follow me back down the street to home.

My latest cats, which are five now, follow me whenever I go out. It has got to the point where I have to sometimes sneak out so they don't notice, particularly if I am going to be near busy roads. I take them out for walks in our local woods and they love it. They will come out with me in all weathers, even snow, though they do complain loudly (miaowing) when walking along.

When they were kittens I had harnesses for them but only used these for a short time when walking the kittens in the garden (before they had had all their jags and were officially allowed out). They didn't like the harnesses at all. Cats much prefer to be free to roam and escape from trouble. I love it that they like to come with me voluntarily, it is a real privilege..

Mine look at me in disgust if I walk through my cul de sac to the cut through path at the back, where I go if I am walking to the shops. Its like they're saying "Where are you going, did we say you could walk in OUR road"

My cat often came for a walk through the woods with me and my hound. Other walkers would see the lurcher and warn me to be careful with the dog because there was a cat around. It was always funny to see their faces when I told them the cat was ours and liked to come for a walk with us before curling up on the couch with the 'hunting dog'.

I really tried this and after one hour I was about five houses from mine but Alf knew every inch along the way. He spent 1/4 of an hour sniffing the front gate of one house. I have had some good ideas in my time but taking Alf for a walk was not in the top one hundred. He goes out in the garden on his lead and on his own.

Had an old brown cat that would come for walks up the hill. There were a few farms up there and he would dart in to look for mice. I was always worried he might get lost but he never did.

He would walk down to the bus stop with me and sometimes get on the bus but the driver would just tell me he hadn't paid his fare and I'd have to put him off
He was always waiting for me at the stop when the bus came back at night and would walk back home with me.

He followed me down the shop one day. I hadn't noticed him following and I'd crossed a couple of main roads
I decided the easiest thing was to carry on to the shop and a couple of boys looked after him while I went in the shop. They didn't want to give him up when I was ready to leave.
He loved all the fuss but I carried him all the way home.
