Admittedly some of the things he says are a bit barmy, but it's not like he's running to a press agent saying "circulate this piece of wisdom!". Most of the quotes are taken out of context from interviews with small circulation (the 'homosexuals don't kill each other' line of thought developed from a conversation when he was asked about how he felt as a teenager) and blown out of proportion, as though they were proclamations from on high. The press aren't interested in Morrissey's music or him as an artist, just in how they can smear him. He is lazily referred to as 'a washed-up 80s reject', yet he is constantly touring the entire world to sell-out concerts, but this is never mentioned. A few weeks ago he was seriously ill with a bleeding ulcer, and has now managed to resume a tour which was postponed, but this didn't make the papers (and if it did it was a small mention). He has been saying some very dumb things recently, but he's also said some very interesting and perceptive things. Which ones do you think get the headlines? |

All those people whining about how he can't sing, most of them referring to how he sang 30 YEARS ago in The Smiths.
Personally, I'm a Smiths fan and a fan of his solo stuff and I like his voice in the 80's and his voice now, it has matured very nicely. I also appreciate a lot of the humour in his lyrics, it's too easy for people to lazily label ALL his music as 'droning' and 'miserable' when they haven't even listened to what he's singing. I have seen him live in the past few years several times. I saw him last year singing full belt over a very loud band, there's no way that anyone with an ear for music and any sense of objectivity who witnessed that could say he can't sing in tune or has a weak voice. You may not like what he sings, and you may not like him as a person, but what he does sing he sings very well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwrmM...PYZKekJCgy60Y0 As for him being gay, I think he is, but it's not of any relevance to me. |

You know I was going to argee with saltydog - but you've just justified Morrisey. I'm a veggie too - and yes you have the right to eat animals if you so desire but one of the things Mozza et al do have the right to do is crit you for it - it's the comparisions with a bunch of hapless Scandinavians being slaughtered at a summer camp by a nazi nutter with the meat trade that's beyond the pale.

Reel Around the fountain Handsome devil This Charming Man Shoplifters Of the World Unite I have Forgiven Jesus Hand In Glove William It Was Really Nothing Maladjusted Pretty Girls Make Graves Im The End Of The Family Line You could interpret them in any way you want, like he says, but I'd say most of his songs are about 'someones' painful gay experience. But he will come up with an ulterior meaning when pressed. Such as the meaning for William - "it occurred to me that within popular music if ever there were any records that discussed marriage they were always from the female’s standpoint - female singers singing to women: whenever there were any songs saying ‘do not marry, stay single, self-preservation, etc’. I thought it was about time there was a male voice speaking directly to another male saying that marriage was a waste of time… that, in fact, it was ‘absolutely nothing’.All in my opinion as a one time fan of course. |

I don't buy the whole "we're all in love with the monarchy," thing. That's just something else the press pushes and not all of Morrissey's rants are about the monarchy anyway. He courts the controversy and the only way to maintain that is to play ball with the press. Hence the reason it gets reported now, as opposed to when he was younger (ie. he actually meant what he said in the past. Now he just does it for the publicity). Quote:

If starting to look like Les Dawson means you're gay, then I guess he's gay -

Imagine the 'music' they made together![]() Morrissey always was gay. I remember reading an early SMiths interview where he alluded to being familiar with Peter Dudley (Bert Tilsley) who was an avid cottager himself. I know someone that worked as a roadie for him a couple of years back and he has a 'penchant' for rough mexicans, one of which was in his band at the time. God, asexual, how 80's ![]()

I think not - apparently the tragic Mr McKenize towards the end of his life wrote a riposte called "Stephen it was really something".

He's allowed to think what he wants, but he's turned into a parody of animal rights activists, and it's reached the point where he's probably harming his causes more than he's helping them... And his "hetrophobic" statements are just ridiculous.
Part of me wonders if he's doing a Joaquin Phoenix, and this is going to turn out to be some ridiculous mega prank, because that's the only logical explanation for half the crap he spews... |

I liked some The Smiths stuff but to call them undisputed 'the greatest band in the world' is bs - that they are yours is all you say with any credibility. |

One of my mates is gay so I'm not a homophobe but in the spirit of acknowledging that all sexual orientations contain their bad eggs a few members of the SA and Ronnie Kray can be added to the list. Kray was probably a sadist to boot as well.

The interview was clearly what Morrissey felt when he was a TEENAGER.
" What political causes mattered most to you back then, and are they still important to you now?" The interviewer is a teenager . http://observer.com/2012/12/rookies-...uzzfeed-music/ Music This Charming Man: An Interview With Morrissey “My life as a teenager was so relentlessly foul.” |

I don't think he's exclusively anything, sexuality-wise.

I can't believe it took until 2013 for Johnny Marr to release a solo album, I mean he was the most talented one who wrote the music, and it's not as if he could sing any worse.

Morrissey was always rather effeminate and he is unbelievably bitchy. He's also rich, famous and yet has never had a public relationship with a woman.
I'd say do the maths. Personally, I've always thought he was as obviously gay as, say, Freddie Mercury was. Similarly, there were always questions about Mercury and some people always refused to believe he was actually gay, especially the women who fancied him and didn't want to believe he was gay. I'm sure the same is true of Morrissey. He just probably doesn't have the sex drive that Mercury had (which of course ended up killing him). |

He went out with Michael Stipe of REM for 3 years.
I think that says enough. |
