1andrew1
01-03-2013
Lord Sugar "When I joined YouView in 2011, my brief from the shareholders was to use my experience in the electronics industry to get the product to market and into the homes of consumers.

"Having done that successfully, my job is complete and I will now focus my time and attention into my other businesses."

A replacement chairman will be appointed in due course.

Here's a better article.

Would have liked to have been a fly on the wall there

Ha ha ha! Good link.

And I really don't know what to make of this development. As it was Sugars job to get it launched. Which he achieved. So job done. Though to lose such a high profile figurehead may be a blow.

What I'd like to know is WHY he resigned, and what prompted the subsequent row. I hope we find out, but I won't be holding my breath!

It said so in the article, d@ve, it was because he announced he was resigning. Must have new fish to fry.

He's successfully launched Youview so he can move on to other projects now. That said, this success owes a lot to BT Vision and TalkTalk who are promoting Youview and giving the boxes to customers.

true, it has been successful only as yet another subscription based tv service, as a buy your own box to rival freeview who carry the channels anyway, it has flopped. it's a pants service, i prefer good old freeview.

I would imagine that he has enough dosh that he doesn't have to stick around if he doesn't like a place any more - and with previous run ins with desmond it doesn't sound like much of a fun place to be :-S

Those two don't live more than a couple of miles apart here in Epping Forest.

Maybe, but I've been around long enough to know that the real reasons for high profile resignations often take some time to emerge. And in this case, the row afterwards may point towards *something* having happened to precipitate the resignation.

Or it may not: time will tell.

We didn't have to wait very long!

Subscriber access only... but if it's that, and if they or the content provider start sharing (or could already share) my personal data in any personally identifiable way that I cannot block, as might be necessary for this kind of advertising, then I will not go near this product or one like it. I might even throw an A.S. style strop.

Youview should be careful... VERY careful what they do, or agree to.

Sugar has been promoting another set top box for a while now on Twitter. It allows you to watch UK TV channels over the Internet, which is very suspect. I can't imagine the YouView board being too pleased, so I wondered if that was the reason.

I have unfollowed him now. He sends far too much spam these days.

You could say the same of Sky. They have given their boxes away since launch. I subscribed to them for six years, and wild horses couldn't drag me back, but even I wouldn't call them flops.

In what way is it a pants service? What you get is a Freeview+ twin tuner HD PVR, with additional capability to download programming over the Internet. In return for that, you agree to take the TalkTalk Plus package (or BT equivalent), which brings you fast broadband and unlimited downloads, all at a reasonable price in my opinion. What is pants about that? If you prefer Freeview+, that is fine, but there is no need to knock YouView - which is, incidentally, the fastest-growing TV platform in the country just now.

You should learn not to follow YoouView PR..... but, certainly, the fact that Mr Alan Sugar has been treat as a be-acth, and told "You're Fired" in no uncertain terms (it doesn't matter how Mr Alan Sugar wants to present his interpretation of the facts) gives YouView the chance to become a good, great or even excellent system.

Actually isn't it a device that allows you to view UK TV channels over the internet while abroad.

Abroad, at home, or wherever there is an internet connection. The point being, Shugs is promoting something that wont be too popular with the YouView board. A very strange thing to do as a chairman of that board.

Your on the assumption they won't be happy, but you don't know for certain.
It's not like this device is in an way a rival to YouView as its for viewing Live TV over the Internet whereas YouView offers catch-up over the Internet as well as being a PVR.

Sure we do. The BBC are not getting their licence fee, and the commercial channels are not getting revenue from it. We are not talking about individuals around the boardroom table. It's the companies/organisations they represent.

As for whether its ethical or not, or what is best for the likes of you and I, is a different matter. Personally I think the BBC should be allowed to sell iPlayer subscriptions to the rest of the world. It's only because they cant, is what causes all this nonsense.

Does anyone have a link to the device? I can see rights owners not being too impressed with such a device.
