Has the recent equine episode put you off beef burgers full stop?

I do have to say that I've not visited the major burger stores since. It's not so much I fear what's in it, as we all know it's junk, but I just don't feel that I could enjoy them like I used to anymore. I used to really enjoy my junk food.

If I was consuming one I think I'd feel a little niggling thought in the back of my mind affecting my enjoyment now. Maybe it will pass.

You just mention burgers but do you mean frozen burgers?

I rarely eat frozen burgers. I make my own because I prefer fresh cooked and just underdone if possible. Even if cooked through they are still far more tender than frozen burgers.

These days I don't even add anything into the mix. Just fresh mince made into a pattie or ball and slapped on the cast iron grill/pan.
With the ball you put it in and leave it to get a crust and then squash it down with a spatula.

I had a homemade one on Tuesday.

Yesterday was out and two friends had burgers in Yates so it's not put them off either.

I'm much the same as degsyhufc, as in I tend to make my own burgers rather than buying frozen ones. Although I do admit that I have a weakness for those tinned burgers in onion gravy.

You seriously cannot beat your own burgers. Buy mince from the butchers, whatever else you like with it and there you go. Doesn't cost that much and they are much bigger, nicer.

The butchers locally keep very odd hours. Most people are at work when they are open.

Supermarkets are open all day and all night.

Never eaten frozen burgers, I buy fresher ones or would like to make my own, and when I've eaten out occasionally at a pub the burgers are OK

I only eat brand name burgers (Mcdonalds,rustlers ect)which hasnt been confirmed as Horse contaiminated so it hasnt bothered me as much

but it has shocked me

This thread got me thinking. I'm making Armadillo Eggs for tea tomorrow, they're a sort of burger.

Nope not that I visit McDonalds or Burger King that much anyway but not putting me off.

I've eaten Zebra so can't really complain about having eaten horse. My main objection is not knowing about the sources etc.

That said not been buying frozen burgers but that was only ever as an emergency freezer standby because they were cheap and did a few meals. Iceland have had better deals on other stuff more recently so not had the need to but them.

Managed to blag the fresh meatballs and fresh chicken fillets reduced when I was in so have bunged them in the freezer. My latest thing is making home made burgers from pork mince which are fab again thats a good price so I get some bung it in the freezer and use as needed. Thats what I had last night actually and now suddenly craving them again.

Considering its not like the retailers chose horse suppliers. Horse is engrained into the entire supply chain.

It has definitely reduced my enjoyment of them. I recently ordered a cheeseburger from the kebab shop and I couldn't help but question what was in it to a point I couldn't eat it (before the scandal, I never had a problem with burgers even if they appeared low quality).

Why do people have a problem eating horse anyway? Or is it just people realising the value quality of the stuff they've been buying.

I had a Whopper the other day and I know they've had to change suppliers and it seemed thin and gristly, or do they do a thinner one when it's the King for a Day?

I've always known that Burgers contain stuff you really don't want to know about anyway.
The fact one of the things found in burgers is horse is the least worrying thing to know.
I don't eat many burgers anyway but I won't stop eating them either.

No it hasnt put me off, probably been eating horsemeat for years, we dont eat burgers very much apart from summer on the bbq, I see Iceland are doing a big promotion selling them half price I,ll buy a box at the weekend

i used to eat a lot of minced beef, but i rarely eat it now and i've gone off the taste and texture to be honest...the equine scare has put me off a bit but i havent eaten it since before that anyway.
i use quorn for bolognese and other mince dishes
