Has the recent equine episode put you off beef burgers full stop?

I don't think many would worry about eating horse it's the idea they are not getting what they paid for and the quality of the horse meat. Some old nag on steroids or something isn't going to do you much good animals in the food chain have to be given drugs that don't affect humans whereas horses can be given anything !

No, I generally make my own. I've been out for lunch and ordered burger's on a couple of occasions since the horse meat stories came to light too.

Like many others, I only eat home made with tracable meat and the occasional pub one, again tracable.

There's a book, now over 100 years old, that I read many years ago and it made me very aware of what might be in our meat products. It's called The Jungle and it's by Upton Sinclair. I would recommend it meat eaters or not.

I suspect that burgers are just the tip of the Iceberg. I predict that all sorts of crap is going to be found in cheap sausages next. (donkey meat for example)

It hasn't put me off at as like a lot of people here I tend to make my own burgers as its cheaper and I like to know what my kids are eating. The only place I eat burgers ouside home is GBK.

I've eaten ostrich, kangaroo, crocodile, shark, frogs legs, snails and guinea pig.
The difference is that's how they were described on the menu.
Eating horse wouldn't bother me.
What bothers me is that it's been used illegally as a cheap meat source.
I wonder about the provenance and processing hygiene.
I spent three weeks in US last year and didn't eat a burger.
On the flight out I'd read "Medium Raw" by Anthony Bourdain.
I now eat only burgers I made myself.

The upside is that traditional butchers are seeing an increase in business

its put me off not cooking from scratch. I don't mind the idea of eating horse, its more eating horse thats not fit for human consumption is my worry

I've got quite a bit of minced beef in the freezer and I'm not sure if I will eat it. Not because I think it will harm me (though who knows), but I feel I just won't be able to thoroughly enjoy what I'm eating. I don't feel like spending all that time making something nice, only to find I just can't relax with it when I sit down with it.

My money's on seagull in chicken burgers/products next - not that I know what seagull tastes like, but I could imagine it's white meat.

To the OP, personally yes it has put me off buying them. I don't buy burgers very often - once or twice a year to go on BBQ while camping - and I've always bought Birdseye for the misguided belief that they at least had good quality control....

And as others have said, it's not the eating of horse that's the issue, it's the fact that they don't have complete oversight of their food chain (I honestly thought that after BSE the tracking issue had been fixed - how naive am I ).

I really don't care if horse meat is in anything. What I DO care about is the fact the sellers (Findus etc) don't know what's in the stuff i'm buying. It could be anything ffs.

that's exactly how i feel; my mum will eat mince from morrisons providing its fresh lean steak mince but im still not happy to eat it, though i havent heard of any horse meat contamination in morrisons and it sounds like its contained mainly in frozen and convenience foods which we dont eat at all
i'll stick to quorn for now!!!
i eat ham and chicken from the deli, im hoping they cant mess with that!!

Ooh not me. Like I said I made a homemade burger on Tuesday and with the other half of the mince I made a bolognaise sauce.
Had it last night and it was lovely.

theyve been tested and got the all clear, seems like a lot of people are buying them I got the last box of quarterpounders tonight, I,ll risk it dont think they,ll kill me and be lovely on the bbq
