I'm hoping there are people on this forum who were maybe teenagers during her peak years (1990 - 1998). I know she was quite the music force in America, but looking at things like chart statistics she never really caught onto the UK in the same way...

I remember being very popular when she released "We Belong Together".

She was big, maybe not humungous like Madonna. Think maybe overshadowed a little by Janet and Whitney but she was still big. I bought her Daydream album when I was 11 - at that agevi knewcwho she was and a few of her songs. I remember that particular year being pretty big for her, 1995-6, the kids at school singing Fantasy and Always Be My Baby.

Daydream and Music Box were both number 1 in the UK weren't they?

Definitely!! How can you not know this from just looking at chart stats?
8 of her albums have gone top 10 here in the uk. Having said that she is one of those artists that carries an air of success on the back of one hugely successful era.
She was everywhere when Music Box was released & managed to keep varying degrees of momentum going right up until Rainbow!

Yeah, agree with this. After Rainbow it sort of when quiet for a while until Mimi.

I would say she was popular enough but her UK chart success has never matched her American chart success. Her biggest hit here is 'All I Want For Christmas Is You''. Mainly because download sales allowed it to be so.

Well i showed up a year later than her debut but i would say 1993-96 was her commercial peak in the UK yielded her only million selling album both her #1 albums and her biggest hit (WY or ALIWFC depending how u look at it). But also 97-99 wasn't that bad either. But then her last big success wasnt until 05 and that seems to have been a fluke.

Mariah, Celine and Whitney were the 90s powerhouse vocals - unrivalled .....all 3 changed the shape of vocal dynamics and expectations. Mariah was at her pick with her debut, Music Box and Daydream in the UK. She gained both great acclaim, sales and admiration. We Belong Together was her revival/comeback hit after her more rnb/hiphop generic songs and albums failed in comparison over here.

A bit harsh calling 05 a fluke!

And through the 90s Madonna and Kylie were bigger than any of them in this country, let's face it.

I think notorious would be a better description than popular. Did wonders for the sales of earplugs.

It's been almost 7 years and her career has slowly been in decline i'm yet to see any evidence to the contrary

Of course - she's always been a household name. During any point in her career, you'd struggle to find somebody who had never heard of her, of her music - that's when you've become a star.

What are you on about? Not a major fan here by any means, but jeez, the woman was in a different class vocally - not many can hit high notes like that. A lot of her music sucked, but when producers got it right, she smashed it. e.g Dream lover, one sweet day etc..

I think she is most popular in North America. South East Asia and Japan. Even in places like Australia she only has like 1 or 2 no. 1 singles.

Yes between 1993-1996 she was huge over here. I was there and I remember despite what people want to say.

She is always regarded as one of the best voices but is definitely not as successful here as she was in America.
It's mad but pink is like one of the most successful acts ever in Australia, same with rihanna in the uk and Taylor swift in America.
