That's what I don't get, Mariah has the typical British humour yet the media are ***** to her.
Anyone who hasn't seen her appearance on The Friday Night Project needs to watch it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzHodqBID_0 |

I think the Diva thing gets played up in the media so much is , and don't shoot me, there's not much else to say about her (unrelated to music)
She's never really courted controversy, had a string of high profile love affairs or problems with addiction, she's not a style icon, no new religion. Until she married Nick there was rarely anything about her personal life "newsworthy" and even now it's just a few lovey dovey pictures, nothing weird or scandalous. So a story about hiring a limo for a dress or being late for an interview is all that gets reported about her. She has money and she likes to spend it, for 20+ years in the industry I don't think that's the worst way to be she may as well enjoy her success and if she wants to pay someone to hold her drinking straw well that's her business haha. She seems to donate a lot to charity. Prior to 1997 she wasn't really allowed to do much promotion, interviews, partying etc so the media had nothing to write about her. Once she shed her good girl image, I remember how they kept linking her to every single rapper she worked with. In 2001 & 2002 she got the label of being a crazy diva and it stuck for a long while. She still has the diva label but since being becoming a Mother, the media have eased up a little and tend to focus on her and her family now. |

She did an interview on Jimmy Fallon the other night. While declining to give a name of the album, she did mention she had plenty of possibilities in her head. She also stated the album should be out in May.

Some album news. Quote:
Mariah Recruits The-Dream, Hit-Boy For New Album
The singer says her new album will have a 'lot more raw ballads than people might expect.' "It's a lot to juggle, but I'm handling it," Mariah Carey says while driving to an evening studio session in Las Vegas for her new album. In town for the Vegas Week segment of "American Idol," the first-year judge was on her way to meet up with producers Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox after having put dem babies to bed. "It's about making sure I have tons of good music, because at the end of the day, that's the most important thing," says Carey, who had worked with the pair ("We have our own chemistry," she adds) until 6 a.m. that morning from the night before. She's also enlisted producers Big Jim Wright, Hit-Boy, The-Dream and Rodney Jerkins for tracks on the set. Declining to reveal the album's title, she does allow that there are a "lot more raw ballads than people might expect." There are also uptempo and signature-type songs that represent her different facets as an artist. "Wherever we go with this project, I've tried to keep the soul and heart in it," she says, "with me obviously as the through-line." According to Dupri, "One particular song is definitely going to be a huge fan favorite, in my opinion." Carey's last non-holiday studio album, 2009's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and sparked the hit "Obsessed." She's excited about collaborations with her No. 1 "Honey" cohort Q-Tip and DJ Cassidy this time around. The singer didn't specify if her collaboration with Q-Tip and DJ Cassidy would be for the new album. "I was and still am in a very prolific space," says Carey, who recently released the single "Almost Home" for the March 8 Disney film "Oz the Great and Powerful." She co-wrote and co-produced the song with Stargate; a David La Chappelle-directed video is coming soon. Whether it or her 2012 single "Triumphant" with Rick Ross and Meek Mill will appear on the new album remains to be seen. In the meantime, Carey says she's enjoying her creative streak. "I could say, 'Let's stop now.' But that's not who I am, and that's not what I want this record to be. I really want the fans to love this record." |

I like E=MC2. It's a fun pop album. That Chick and Cruise Control are great.

I thought E=MC2 had some good moments but overall it was a bit messy and inconsistent and didn't quite have the quality of The Emancipation Of Mimi but it is far from her worst rainbow i'm looking at you

Far from it. You wont find many celebrities of her magnitude who are as giving and close to her fans as she is. Also not to forget the work she does for underprivileged kids.

globally, it was Madonna, Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Shania ......all had huge sales....and huge hits......... Kylie was only big in Aus, parts of Asia and UK...
And anyway, we're not talking about global impact here, we're talking about impact in the UK. Shania Twain never broke the UK until the very late 1990s with Come on Over. |

Mariah Carey was bigger than Madonna worldwide in the 1990s between 1993 and 1997. Mariah's album sales and the performance of her singles from Music Box, Daydream and Butterfly to a degree pretty much dwarfed anything Madonna released from Erotica, Bedtime Stories and Evita. I'd even go as far as saying Whitney was bigger than Madonna for the early to mid part of the 1990s thanks to The Bodyguard.

Very popular amongst women drowning their sorrows after a break up and dogs. The only ones who can hear the end of her notes.

Last time I checked, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston both had multiple high grossing stadium tours in the 1990s around the world. Madonna stopped touring after The Girlie Show and wasn't active as a live force for much of the decade. The Bodyguard (soundtrack and film) were bigger than any film Madonna made in the 1990s, Evita included. The Bodyguard soundtrack has sold over 40 million copies worldwide and I Will Always Love You has sold more copies than any Madonna single ever has. Even the film Waiting to Exhale grossed more in the US than Evita did at the box office. Mariah was also selling albums (Music Box and Daydream) in numbers in the 1990s that Madonna could only dream of doing again at that point in her career. Butterfly has also sold more worldwide than what Erotica and Bedtime Stories have sold combined. There's no denying Madonna's success had diminished between 1992 and 1997, she certainly wasn't the force she was in the 1980s at that point in her career. Even Celine Dion was selling more records and singles than Madonna worldwide in the 1990s. Post Immaculate Collection, Madonna didn't really get back on track until Ray of Light. As for the Golden Globe win, she was given that as a well done for finally starring in a film that she didn't suck in and/or ruin. The success of Evita doesn't come close to the success and impact that Whitney had with The Bodyguard.
If you want to compare the acclaim of 2 films I like, thats up to you, I like them both. Which got the awards wasnt up to me! |

After getting sidetracked by yet another touchy Madonna fan, back to the original point of the thread.
Mariah Carey's success in the UK in the 1990s started off patchy -- at least on the singles chart anyway. She hit her stride in the about 1992 and scored a string of hit singles and two number one albums over the next 8 years or so. She was definitely one of the biggest female stars in the UK from 1993 to 1999. Her fan base seemed to diminish post 2000 and her success since then has been off and on. I think it's fair to say she only scored a number one with Against All Odds because Westlife were featured on it. I have no doubt that she could score another major hit like We Belong Together again if she wanted to. I definitely prefer her earlier material to the later stuff with the guest rappers. She seems like a good laugh if interviews are anything to go by, plus she can sing. |

It still annoys be that she missed out on scoring her 3rd UK #1 with "We Belong Together" by a mere 392 copies

In 1998 Mariah was honored as the world's best-selling recording artist of the 1990s at the World Music Awards. So yes in the 90's she sold more than anyone else including Madonna.
