I think it's also fair to say that Mariah was a bigger star and success than Madonna in the US during the 1990s from the get go. Madonna never pulled 4 number singles from her debut album (or any for that matter). Even Janet Jackson was bigger than Madonna in the US and other countries for the majority of the 1990s. It's funny how it pains some Madonna fans to admit that she hasn't always been number one.
Mariah Carey's '90s material>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Madonna's '90s material. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion were the biggest female artists of the 1990s. Madonna was without a doubt the biggest female star of the 1980s. As for Mariah's UK chart success, she was big during the early to late 1990s but her success post Rainbow has been patchy at best. |

Fantasy should have been number one, or Dreamlover

The only time Madonna really was bigger than Mariah, Whitney and Janet was her Ray of Light album in the late 90's. Even Celine Dion sold more than ROL with her Let's Talk About Love album (thanks to My Heart Will Go On). |

I would say Mariah Carey most popular era was 1993 to 1999, with Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly and Rainbow.

I always knew Music Box and Daydream were very successful and I think Butterfly is regarded by many as a fan favourite but never realised how many people don't like Rainbow. If I'm honest it isn't as good as the latter three though I love the two versions of Heartbreaker and X-Girlfriend.
Btw I love the cover picture on the front of #1s. She is very very sexy in that pic.

It still annoys be that she missed out on scoring her 3rd UK #1 with "We Belong Together" by a mere 392 copies

This annoys me too. That's virtually nothing when you look at the mass of people buying the records. It did well in the weeks after that, though. It dropped to 3 the week after, and rose back to 2 the week after that. Then I think it had a very slow drop out of the top 10, 20, 30 and then 40.

She was popular in the UK really came out of Whitney's shadow, by the time she released Music Box and 'Without You' spending a month at the top. It went downhill after Butterfly I reckon because at least that album still had her trademark ballads.

I think, like Janet Jackson she was HUGE in the States but only middling here. Everyone would know who she was and she'd be a household name and that, but she wouldnt be releasing smash after smash hit single. Well, not middling, big but not as big as someone like Kylie or Madonna (or even Britney) in the 90s-early 2000s in the UK.
Britney's another one, nearly every one of her singles was a hit here in the UK but in the US according to Billboard a lot of her singles stalled outside or just inside the top 20. A question to older music fans as well, did people listen to music so much back in the 90s? Like nowadays, in the street, on the bus, on the tube, in the shops, at the library, just walking, people have their headphones on listening to music all the time. Before I got a portable music player I didnt do this, just the radio in the morning and at night and a CD when I was cooking or whatever in the day. That's a way the market's different now I think and why singles dominate. |

Janet was one of the big stars in the 90's but not anywhere near as big as her contemporaries. I have to say though that when Mariah was starting out I kind of pictured Janet and Mariah as not too big at the time until Mariah did Music Box that's when she became a huge International act. Janet never really was until she finally achieved International Superstar status with the Janet album

I always thought Dina Carroll was going to be the UK equivalent to Mariah, certainly when I was 8 years old back then that's how I saw her, but it wasn't to be.

I remember seeing an article saying Lisa Stansfield was the UK's answer to Mariah. Even though I think Lisa was out first

Mariah was huge in the UK, people of all ages have heard of her. About the whole chart posistion, she has never really promoted her stuff over here. She did a performance on X Factor not so long back, but people didn't even realize she had a single out until she performed.
Can't wait for her new album! |

It's BRILLIANT - I have played it over and over on my iPad, definitely a return to form for Mariah, I love it, I hope it's on the album when it is released. I wasn't too keen on Triumphant or her past few singles to be honest.
Btw any news about the relase date for the album or possible names? x

Shes an odd one. shes someone who's name was always mentioned, but aside from "All I Want For Xmas", I wouldn't know any of her songs aside from the obvious ones (Without You and the one using the Tom Tom sample).
I always lump her in with Whitney/Celine/Toni 'powerhouse diva' types. With huge sales, she obviously touches alot of peoples hearts, but, she leaves me cold, along with the above acts (apart from Whitneys singles). Alot of it stems from that glossy/polished, over-produced sound that happened to the soul/rnb market in the early 90's and which has never gone away. Its a 'production thing' for me, where the bass is too the forefront of the mix and the whole sound comes across as FLAT, yet is topped by vocal gymnastics to cover up pedestrian song-writing, and leaves me under-whelmed! ![]() I remember reading an in-depth Times article/interview about her, when she went off the rails, and it was very sad. She appeared to have been surrounded by hangers on/users and she came across as quite alone. The whole Tommy Mottola thing sounded quite nasty. This article revealed to me that she wrote her own material, so, impressd by that, I gave her a shot, but, as I said, unmoved artistically. |

Absolutely! I went to an all girls' school in the 1990s, and Mariah was very popular with us from about 1994 onwards, she was generally liked more than Madonna. Oh, and I remember the guys all fancied her!
