Somewhere there's a tape recording one of our poor teachers did of us howling Without You on our last day of 4th class... Madonna in my mind wasn't popular in the 90s until Evita and then of course Ray of Light.

She was popular at the beginning of the 90s too. Vogue came out in 1990 along with the Immaculate Collection, which is I think the highest selling greatest hits album ever (feel free to correct me on that one though.) The build-up to Erotica was massive too, but I think that was a case of the hype being too big that it weighed down the whole thing. A bit like Born This Way perhaps.

The trend towards Carey-style singers came in just as Madonna was falling out of trend so she had a few lean years from about 1993-98 while Mariah was at her peak.

I always lump her in with Whitney/Celine/Toni 'powerhouse diva' types.

With huge sales, she obviously touches alot of peoples hearts, but, she leaves me cold, along with the above acts (apart from Whitneys singles).

Alot of it stems from that glossy/polished, over-produced sound that happened to the soul/rnb market in the early 90's and which has never gone away.

Its a 'production thing' for me, where the bass is too the forefront of the mix and the whole sound comes across as FLAT, yet is topped by vocal gymnastics to cover up pedestrian song-writing, and leaves me under-whelmed!

I remember reading an in-depth Times article/interview about her, when she went off the rails, and it was very sad. She appeared to have been surrounded by hangers on/users and she came across as quite alone. The whole Tommy Mottola thing sounded quite nasty. This article revealed to me that she wrote her own material, so, impressd by that, I gave her a shot, but, as I said, unmoved artistically.”

Out of curiosity, which album did you listen to?
