I see What Lorraine Newman is doing now.....
So this past few weeks we have had storylines with Sharon,Phil,Dot,Patrick,Denise,Kat,Carol,Bianca
It seems that she's building the characters up and giving some of our Favs some screen time. I see she seems to be re building the Beale family now and that New Bobby is a much better actor so far than the past one. Kat and Bianca Ian and Denise Freindships have been building up lately too. I have the feeling that soon we will hear of some big storylines We had this sort of thing happen before.Where EastEnders came out of a lull and built it's characters up and then boom the big storylines started. |

I bloody well hope there will be some big storylines soon. 2013 has been so painfully boring for EE. It starts to make me miss the mess that was 2012. At least there were actual stories going on.

Giving Patrick,Dot ect Storylines is also a plus if you ask me. I really do think that's what she's doing and we should hear of some big storylines pretty soon |

From what I can see is she's building the Character interaction and the community feel to the show.

I'm really enjoying EE recently because of the understated nature of the show. It's reflecting real people having real issues and that's something that has been lacking in the show for years and years.
I agree with the OP, it's quite clear what's happening now is deliberate. The interview stated that rebuilding was her plan and she's doing well so far. Big storylines can and *will* be worked in over the coming months, but what's happening now is important. I'm personally starting to care the the characters more and the show has become more of an ensemble. It's definitely a huge step away from Kirkwood's block story telling which is a step in the right direction. Coming in and planning twenty huge exciting storylines isn't a viable way to run a soap and is perhaps where Kirkwood fell down. One of his first storylines was the Baby Swap which clearly went for sensationalism over decent story telling and look at the reception that got, it wasn't positive! Newman has shown quite clearly that she can do big episodes and storylines, she fixed the disaster which was the Shagger storyline after all. |

Give it three months - if no big stories then abandon hope all who enter here.

There was a bit of time nothing actually happened but then all of a sudden there was plenty 'Big' stuff happening. We know very little about whats actually coming up. |

I'm all for understated but what I dislike is the constant repetitive nature we've been seeing, this Phil/Sharon/Jack storyline is really killing theses characters, its giving me the could care less attitude towards them as a viewer, I hate how dumb down they have become with Sharon alienating her with just the Branning and Mitchell drama, her interacting with Dot or Ian has been pretty lack of, I know her and Phil are important too the show and its history but I think they way they're going about getting the back together is rubbish, I wait to the day she back behind the Vic where for me she works best.
I'd praise the Denise/Ian/Beale stuff that too me is the only thing that is making this show watchable and its a pretty understated storyline at the beginning but in my opinion has been the only exciting thing that has been coming from them in months apart from Abi/Jay and a few Michael stuff and the Kat/Bianca friendship nothing else is appealing for me. |

I agree, actually. I like tonight's epsiode - well, the ones where there was relationship development based on the characters and what's going on their lives. This is w/o the sensationalism or the desire to make anything big or overstated out of them. It's all about the characters and what relationships can realistically be formed out of them, their history (back stories) and personalities.
The ones that stood out for me were: - Ian and Denise; - Ian and Dot (Dot's council problems plays a part, plus Ian's new lease of life) - Abi and Lola; - Masood's mini-life crisis, teased out through Ayesha, Tam and AJ. The ones I don't particularly like are: -Tanya and Sharon's bitch-fest over coffee round the table. Less of the bitching and it might actually work. - Phil, Lexi and Lola because it's dragging on a bit, but I can see (f it turns out successfully) why LN is doing it this way. -Phil/Jack/Sharon. It's too repetitive and therefore drags on and on. |

I agree. I think the week after Zainab's exit I began to notice an improvement in quality and it has gradually continued since then. I'm not saying Zainab was the cause of the poor quality, far from it she was a terrific character and I was sad to see her go, but the quality wasnt' there during her exit storyline. I don't know who devised it but it really didn't play out at all well. It was like they didn't know what to do with her, so they dreamed up this ludicrous water fountain plot that dragged on and on, made her unbelievably vile to Mas and then we were supposed to feel for her when he called it a day.
Anywho, yes the understated feel to the show and focus on relationships, friendships has shades of what EastEnders was set out to be in back in the old days. That isn't to say the quality of the old days is there, but it has been enjoyable. The Liam gang storyline has had a very positive start. I loved the focus on the Jacksons after what seemed to be a prolonged absence. Bianca's friendship with Kat has been grown nurtured in the past while aswell which has been fun to watch. The aftermath of Kat's affair has been refocused aswell and we can see things aren't staying civil for long. It was only natural Kat and Roxy were going to come to blows, given the explosive personalities of both women. I am looking forward to seeing where the divorce storyline goes and seeing more Kat vs Roxy. I do love a nice feud and we haven't had a female feud for quite a while. Roxy is too good for Alfie, and their relationship has been built on a man's knee jerk reaction to his wife's cheating and the shock of finding out who with! I am enjoying Phil/Sharon/Jack, and I think next week will see another twist as the Lexi storyline continues. I think merging these two stories were a good move. Phil is a pig and I loved Sharon's line tonight "You can be a right pig sometimes" FINALLY! it's like the other characters go deaf when Phil is around, and don't hear him being a git. Next week I think we will see the show up the ante a little bit. It doesn't need to go all guns blazing, cars exploding, pubs's burning down or anything like that. Focus on what they are doing and work in the big the storylines when you have made the audience care about the characters involved. That has often been Enders's big problem. Rushing a story to the big dramatic scene, and less of a fig we could give. The money spent on that car fireball involving Joey and Lauren before Christmas, was a criminal waste of funds that I'm sure aren't as plentiful these days. Given the tight budget anything like that should be reserved for very special occasions, in stories that require involving characters who have the profile to deliver a story with a big impact. |

You see? People need to give her a chance!
As I've said many times before, Kirkwood literally RUINED the show, it must take a while to repair it I've personally enjoyed Newman's producing for a while now, January wasn't great, but it was much better than all of 2011! |

I agree. I love the new Bobby already. Putting Kat and Bianca is a stroke of genious. I love Ian and Denise together. I'm also loving Tamwar working on the market - we see so much more of him as well. Michael and Alice are interesting too - just what is he up to?

I think Lorraine is doing fine and deserves more credit than she gets. Yes the show currently have faults but who can expect it to be perfect all the time? Some people often pick out the bad instead of the good.
