Because Rihanna's Stay is terrible. There have been much better slow songs out than that. They play this then have never played Born To Die by Lana Del Rey!

Lawson and Taylor Swift I quite like. But it seems the same ten repeated songs on...and when I'm at work for twelve hours it makes me want to throw the radio out of the window!

It's as if this station feels they can make an artist/song popular by playing the song over and over and over.

Lawson are signed to Global Talent so they're guaranteed airplay on Capital & Heart.
The music is based on research from focus groups. What's popular in the demos gets airplay.

As a CHR format, Capital "plays the hits" so you shouldn't expect variety and it means the popular tracks come around often so listeners can expect it when they tune in.

I think they choose the groups based on how much they get paid by their record labels.

That's not completely true. Starships by Nicki Minaj was played every couple of hours from THE DAY it was released. The exact same day it was premiered to the world Capital played it from the get-go. There was obviously no research or feedback or whatever involved with that song. Capital would've played that song regardless of whether it was liked or not.

Capital have the demographic they want to target (they claim it's something different but it's probably 25-55 year-old women), and they play songs that their target audience can tolerate without wanting to turn off the station (so songs like Moves LIke Jagger, Domino, We Found Love and Starships).

One Rihanna single that didn't get much airplay on Capital was Talk That Talk from last year. They played We Found Love more when Talk That Talk was out. I also doubt Capital will be playing Pour It Up very much, because 40 year-old women aren't going to like that song, and they don't want to lose audience.

I think they choose the groups based on how much they get paid by their record labels.
They playing Thrift Shop a moderate amount and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis don't have record deals I believe (well, they set up their own record label and signed themselves to it I think, but it's pretty small). But I can't see their next single, Can't Hold Us, getting much Capital support. Capital are probably hoping the Thrift Shop hype dies down as soon as possible so they can stop playing the song.

Stay is generic and is by a big artist like Rihanna so that's why they chose that I imagine. I'm sure money and negotiations with labels come in to it as well.

Global will be paying for PRS/PPL licences to play the music, not receiving money for it. Global's interests are in advertising revenue.

Yeah it's one of those songs that's too massive for them to ignore (despite their obsession with big-name generic music)
Although any hits that sound remotely 'different' (Some Nights, Bangarang, Niggas in Paris, Pompeii, Ho Hey) have no chance of being played

Capital is embarassing sometimes, and the radio presenters are no better. "Next up I'm gonna play the girl who is SMASHING it in the UK right now, Emeli Sande!"
It's like, no, **** off.

Or when they go "Next we're playing the brand new single from Taylor Swift I Knew You Were Trouble" even though it was out 3 months ago

Not as bad as my local radio station who a couple of weeks ago introduced Kings of Leon's 'Sex On Fire', released September 2008, as a "Brand New Single", they also do the same with Taylor, The Wanted, JLS and still refer to Little Things from 1D as a "Brand New Single"

Which is why it is amazing that people are still trapped into listening to the radio.

I can understand this in the work place where there may be no choice.

But why do people put up with this elsewhere?

Clearly, not in the hope of hearing new music.

2011 playlist - Party Rock Anthem, Someone Like You, Grenade, Raise Your Glass, S&M, Firework, Yeah x3, Little Bad Girl, Don't Wanna Go Home, Edge Of Glory and Give Me Everything

2012 playlist - Give Me Everything (still), We Found Love, Call Me Maybe, We Are Young, Turn Up The Music, Starships, Domino, Mama Do The Hump, Titanium, Let Me Love You, Hall Of Fame, Whistle, Wild Ones

2013 playlist - Give Me Everything (still), Let Me Love You (still), Hall Of Fame (still), Starships (still), Drinking From The Bottle, Diamonds, Stay, Troublemaker, Thrift Shop, Die Young, Beneath Your Beautiful, Don't You Worry Child, I Knew You Were Trouble, Kiss You

I know it looks like alot of songs, but seriously, that's all I ever hear. I remember hearing Frank Ocean on Capital a few months ago and thought it was Radio 1 at first, I couldn't believe they were playing a non-dance song!
