Do you think people in general prefer female vocalists?
Just to settle an argument really with friends.
I tend to think that more often than not the winners of talent competitions are usually female or in case not winners generally sell better than male? And I think just in general I can normally name a lot more female singers, artists and bands featuring all females than males? |

I don't watch talent competitions very much, but I do have to say I tend to like more female vocalists than males. I just tend to relate to how women sing about relationships a little more than male vocalists. Also, I really like fashion and seeing different visual looks and a lot of female singers are more into that.
I also find female singers are more diverse in their musical styles. You have dance/electronica, rock and R&B, whereas it seems in recent years a lot of male singers sometimes rely too much on the acoustic guitar singer songwriter thing. I think there have been several winners like that of American Idol in the US and they haven't done well commercially. They all sound the same and kind of bland. |

No. Or at least, if we're talking the entire music industry... no.
Most of the biggest selling artists on lead vocals are male. And quality of songs are more important than a decent voice. Elvis Lennon Michael Jackson Elton John Robert Plant Bon Scott Mick Jagger Bono I don't really know anyone that buys music based purely on vocals anyway, as I said, it's down to the songs... there's plenty of great singers out there. Both male and female. But some not so successful simply because the quality of songs are not good enough. Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen big examples of that. |

I agree with you to an extent, I certainly can think right off the top of my head a lot more female singers than male, though that may be purely because you tend to see a lot more about females in the media, and female artists tend to be a bit more daring and so grab more headlines.
This is just based on my experience though, I am only 20, so 20 years ago it could have been completely different, but this is just based on what I have seen. |

I've personally always found the male voice more attractive, my favourite singer is Elvis and all my other favourites are male.
There are female singers I appreciate though - Randy Crawford, Karen Carpenter, Judith Durham spring immediately to mind. Male voices do not grate on me but some female voices do. I cannot stand the "shriekers" - Mariah Carey, Celine Dion drive me potty. I am female by the way.

I think for solo artists, my preferences seem to be female, although I don't consciously steer away from male vocals, and indeed listen to quite a few, but percentage wise for solo artists I would say my tastes is generally about 80% female, 20% male.
For more classical music, I definitely prefer the male vocal. For choirs I prefer all male vocals rather than female. For bands, I don't mind mixed vocals, but generally my favourites are all male. |

In terms of winners using X Factor, there's been more male (Steve, Shayne, Leon, Joe, Matt and James Arthur) than female (Leona, Alexandra and Little Mix) but as you said, the females out of those do sell better. X Factor have only really produced three big male acts in my opinion: Olly, One Direction and, even if not so much now, JLS (not including JA before he has done his first album away from the show, even if his single did well).
But I do think that in general females do better as well. Adele, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Beyonce Taylor Swift are obviously all massive names, and Emeli Sande has good sales and is practically everywhere too. I don't know at all how far females > males in terms of popularity applies to music from other decades though. |

For me i identify a lot with female voices that come from the soul, stemmed from the heart and speaks the mind...something that really makes you lisen and feel and think...sometimes in the same song/moment that is why i love Madonna (she introduced me to a wide range of styles), Kate Bush (again a massive introduction), Bjork, grace Jones, and ladies like Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, even when its puer Pop with the likes of Britney or Janet Jackson...when the music comes from a dark place (Rhythm Nation, In The Zone, Blackout notably) you can hear it in their voice or manner or production...and i love that...
in terms of male vocals i feel they too stem from a broad/dark place and or have an unusual message behind them....David Bowie, Simon & garfunkel, Marvin gaye, Sly Stone (and his band), Jim Morrison, i feel personifies that

I think there's maybe more variety in female voices, as they cover both soprano & alto, whereas the vast, overwhelming majority of male recording artists sing in the tenor range. Personally, it's the lower male registers that do it for me. Especially when sung with power. Of my current favourite voices, one's a bass & the other a baritone.

In rock music- definitely not, that has always been and still is male dominated. Music in general tended to be male dominated. I would say that from the late 80s-90s female vocalists started slowly over taking males in the mainstream with the big diva singers like Whitney/Mariah and Celine and also the pop performers like Madonna and Janet. So in popular music today female vocalists are more popular and female vocalists from other genres seem to be more able to cross over into the mainstream.
But then there are lots exceptions..and I think there will always be a market for both genders. |

I've always preferred female vocalists for some reason, although I don't mind mixed vocals either if they sound right. I think a lot of female singers tend to be a bit more diverse with their music whereas most (but not all) male singers either end up in a cheesy boyband or boys with guitars type band. If not that then some likely go for the acoustic singer songwriter or middle of the road/covers act.

For mainstream music, yes. It's mainly females that like current vocalists like Bruno Mars, men--straight and gay--don't appear to have any interest in male singers. However, female singers attract the masses: girls and guys (mainly gay) tend to like them. I wouldn't say people necessarily prefer them given the option, but I do think they're more popular due to a wider audience.

Soul and Rn'B have always been different with the girl groups of the 60s and 70s like The Crystals, The Shirelles, Sister Sledge always being worth a listen. I've been listening to music since the 60s and whilst I always mainly listened to rock and new wave and generally didn't take girls music seriously, now I find my iPhone is filled with girls music, Amy, Adele, Rihanna, Ellie, Emeli, Nicola Roberts....alongside Sringsteen and U2....times change. |

I only really listen to soul music and think the richer tones of male voices brings much more to the genre than female.
I do like some females but I'd say 80% of my favourite vocal performances are male ones |

I don't know... I mean, when it comes to true soul music I've always found males and females to be completely equal in my tastes. And this is coming from someone who prefers mainstream r&b. I think soul is a genre which both genders flourish in.

All that I can tell you is where I stand. Out of my ten most favorite solo acts, three of them are female.
