As long as it isn't generic Calvin Harris/ David Guetta crap that all these kids like then I am willing to give anything a try as long as it's got ''meaning'' of some sort involved. I prefer rock/pop-rock and mostly acoustic/ slow music. I like limited country and metal as well.

For me the full popstar has to have their own style/has to look distinctly different from the average person. The music has to be mainstream sounding but has to sound unique to every other artist. And lastly they have to either be really nice or have a big ego, you can't be an inbetweener oh and you have to be inspirational in some way.
Some 'it factor'/full popstars to me are people like Lana Del Rey, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Vince Kidd, Rihanna, Demi Lovato and Little Mix. |

). There has to be an emotional response.Unfortunately, it's been many years since anything in the mainstream made me feel anything other than 'meh'. |

Not a huge fan, but like a few tracks from the aforementioned, as both groups have done outstanding tracks. So much music, so little time to enjoy! I hate most pop with a passion, always have, unless tongue in cheek. There are the odd pop tracks I like, mostly older... |

Hmm....not bad. Good intro, quite hypnotic in an odd way. I do find his voice rather generic though.
anything else? |

For me its the people who seem otherwise ordinary yet with their music they become extraordinary someone that stops me and makes me immediately take notice.

Song-writing ability whether it is lyrical or instrumental generally determines whether I like an artist or not.

The "it" factor to me is the combination of amazing stage presence and really good tracks. But since there's hardly any artist that achieves both, I can settle for one of the two elements I guess. Some artists happen to have horrible songs, but they're such impressive performers that they make it work ( i.e. : 99% of popstars). Other artists leave much to be desired on stage, but their music is simply too amazing to ignore.
