DISCUSSION

Today's top 5 showcase that the tastes in music and the music buying public are changing.

What trends are you noticing it seems that pure pop is beginning to be leaving, one direction with the exception. Will RnB make a revival and is dubstep becoming more popular?

I doubt it, it's probably just this week.

Mr David Bowie was in the top ten a few weeks back. Just like the old days.

The success of Bastille's Pompeii is very exciting. I never thought we'd see an indie song so high again!

He's signed to EMI - not exactly indie. The marketing push for the song was huge.

I know. I got fed up with hearing about Bastille. Especially as the song isn't anything special.

Dubstep was sooo 2011,it's on it's last legs as far as dance phases are concerned, just like 'jungle' was in the mid 1990s & '2-step/garage' was between 1997 & 2001.

R'n'B has simply evolved especially with white acts hopping onto the bandwagon (Macklemore & Mr Timberlake for example).
It's never really gone away from the charts.

But just looking at this weeks Top 20 nearly three quarters are by white acts & a variety of genres, most of which are British which makes a refreshing change.

Dubstep is not going to dominate anytime soon. It had its chance in 2011 and 2012, it didn't happen and now it's over. Skrillex and Nero may get the odd chart entry from time to time, but that's it for dubstep.

As far as r'n'b goes, I would LOVE to see this genre dominating again, but I fail to see any real r'n'b track in the current UK top 5. 'Mirrors' either urban pop and 'Thrift Shop' is new school hip hop with a radio friendly beat.

What I do know for sure is that people are getting tired of electropop and that we're currently in the middle of a transition. I don't know where it will lead, but I doubt it will be r'n'b' or dubstep.

Well for me the real nadir of the charts was June 2011 - pretty all American mindless dance pop in the top 20 - and the Bruno Mars, Pitbull and LMFAO tracks in particular were risible.

I almost gave up listening to the charts but things have got slightly better since.
