I think it was probably Abbott and Costello who made over 40 films together. Can anyone think of anyone who have made more films together.

They were obviously a double act, so is there anyone who were not really connected who made a lot of films together.

Woody Allen and Diane Keaton made 8 films together apparently. I'm sure there are others with more but that was the first that came to mind.

My first thought was the carry on films but apart from b movies (or porn movies) then A&C might have it

Can't think of anything that comes close to Abbot and Costello, they must have it.

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter have now appeared in a really alarming number of films together, they need to give it a rest for a while. Off the top of my head, they're both in:

- Alice in Wonderland
- Sweeney Todd
- Corpse Bride
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- Dark Shadows
- The Lone Ranger (this year)

And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few there.

There's a reasonable likelihood there are greater numbers of couplings in Indian, or possibly even Japanese, cinema.

Didn't Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney go through a period of appearing in pretty much everything together, to the point that they got some special Oscar for it? And this was back in the day when an actor could go from film to film every few weeks, so I reckon they might be worth a look.

I think Abbott and Costello probably have made the most together but there's some good answers that I hadn't thought of. Carry Ons is a good one, Joan Sims and Kenneth Williams made over 20 films together.

That's true, I think they probably made about 20 films together. And Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made a lot together as well.

Just had a look on Wikipedia and they did nine consecutive films together in 1938 (!!), but it's not clear how many sporadic little films they did after that. I'll keep looking.

Good shout with Ginger and Fred, but I don't think they actually made as many films as it seems.

Swing Time (36)
Carefree (38)
Flying Down To Rio (33)
Follow The Fleet (36)

The Barkleys Of Broadway (49)
Gay Divorce (34)

I've possibly missed a couple out.

Judy and Mickey made 10 films together.

And lagging way behind:
Judy and Gene Kelly made 3.
Robert Redford and Jane Fonda made 3.

Thanks. I forgot Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake, they made 38 Blondie films together.

Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee both featured in 24 films together.

Are you just meaning feature films or does short films count?

Laurel & Hardy appeared together in 107 films. They starred in 32 short silent films, 40 short sound films, 23 full-length feature films, and made 12 guest or cameo appearances.

Laurel & Hardly are a good call. Technically, their shorts are 'films', after all. And on that note, is it 'cheating' to extend the cinematic definition beyond the live? Because in that regard we could throw Tom & Jerry (who we must not forget count up appearances in a couple of 'real' films, such as Dangerous When Wet and Anchors Aweigh, as well as their animated shorts) et al into the pot

The Mickey Mouse/Silly Symphonies films definitely count in my book, so Mickey and Minnie (and Donald) have been in hundreds together.

I'm not too well up on silent cinema but I think there's probably a lot of big partnerships in there, considering the production rate in those days.

Yeah if you count shorts then Laurel and Hardy would be a good call. Although the Three Stooges would probably top it, I think they made about 160 shorts.

Westerns are probably also a good genre to turn to for sizeable pairings. Character actors like Ward Bond and co probably appeared in a good couple of dozen films with the likes of John Wayne. Similarly, if you look to filmographies of sheerly immense proportions, in the cases of actors such as John Carradine and Christopher Lee, you're bound to encounter many several repeated co-appearances with other actors.

On that note, Roger Moore and Lois Maxwell (7). Surprised you missed that one!

It's going to be the three stooges followed by laurel and hardy.
Way down on those would be the cast of the carry on movies - I'm sure you can find 2 of them that we're in most of those films, probably Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtry.
