I watched some of the Oscars, the dresses are amazing....and the jewellery and the hair...works of art in themselves.

I haven't been doing much else...exciting.....just the usual chores....and shopping...

Daughter is off to see Beyoncé tonight....I quite like her, but I should imagine her show will be absolutely amazing, but its at the O2 , which is a long long way away from some seats...

We don't have Sky so couldn't watch the Oscars Live

Spent three hours cleaning downstairs of the house - this really has confirmed how housework is a waste of time although it is necessary.

Having a day out today - to the Watts Gallery and the Lightbox - with a friend. At least it isn't miles away - only in Surrey - should take us about an hour.

Garden bursting with colour and it does look great.

Have a good day everyone.

I hope you have a good day out Nyannie...Im feeling full of cold today........very lethargic and listless, but its amazing what a day resting can do to improve things.

My garden isn't quite up, ive a few crocus but hopefully it will look lovely in a few weeks...

So it was the final episode ever of Outnumbered last night, ok so it was a bit sweet with the kids well on the way to growing up and being able to sort their problems out better than the parents themselves.. but I have enjoyed watching this series a great deal.

Morning all.

Hope you feel better soon augusta.

Had a lovely day out and today tackle the mountain of ironing and tidy up. Friends coming for dinner tomorrow night. Making it easy as we are both tired. Will do dessert today so tomorrow will do soup and vegetables.

Had a lovely surprise yesterday which really lifted my spirits. A lovely lily plant arrived from a very dear friend. It brought a smile to my face which lasted all day.

I didn't watch Outnumbered but guess the storylines had come to an end.

Glad you are feeling more cheerful Nyannie....

Ive had a busy day, but I am feeling much better than yesterday....thankfully.

Fascinating observation from my daughter after watching Beyoncé....she was slightly fed up that the show was so so sexual in visual imagery, and the lyrics were as well.. As she said , Beyoncé is a wonderful singer, so why does she need to do this?

And as an adult comment, Beyoncé has grown up with a whole load of little girls looking up to her and being impressed by her songs and attitude. Its a shame that she too is now part of this oversexualised music genre...

what is everyone up to this weekend?

Morning all.

Shall we all meet after Easter? Would people who are interested please PM me with some dates. Same place as before. Cost will be about Ł25.

How are we all? Seems quite quiet on here.

Must get on as I have to make some soup - and the dessert - and clean up as I forgot a key ingredient - o/h is going to get it for me.

Take care

its so sunny id imagine people are outside ...making the most of the sunshine..

we went to the natural history museum yesterday, I do love that place, but it was so crowded.

And then we watched Gravity last night...what an odd film........its impressive, and the photography is immense, but...I wasn't impressed by the story or script....I like watching characters interact and I think I missed that side of acting...

Morning

Absolutely glorious today - everything coming out. Had a walk around our garden - made some notes as to what to plant where. Need to get new thyme plants and some other herbs.

Gravity sounds very good but not sure I want to see it. Do want to see The Grand Hotel Budapest, which sounds very funny - just what I need.

We had friends over for dinner and I am glad I got the majority of things done in the dishwasher last night or I would be spending most of today cleaning up. Will save the hovering for tomorrow!

Have a great day and let's hope England win the rugby!

What a lovely weekend
my boys took me out for a little shopping and then lunch
but we did rush back for the Rugby

And what a win

busy last few days, they have finally finished the new security system
i can now switch on the tv, iphone or laptop and view the outside of the house
and garden, its so very clever
it also records any movement

not feeling so well though, bit of a sore throat, so going to have a bath
watch the T20 cricket, and perhaps a bit of a early night

go to read back and see what everyone else has been up to
hope you all have had a good weekend

I agree the natural history museum is great fun,

and not so much about the story line
my boys went to see three hundred last night
got not as good as the first ...... average

Evening all

Sorry I've been MIA but there is news on the house front We have accepted an offer on our house and similarly have made and had accepted, an offer on a property in a nearby village. The house is lovely and the village seems peaceful and friendly. There's a village hall where they have line dancing, Zumba classes etc, also a wine club, cinema club and gardening society ( not that the latter is exactly my thing!) We had a wander round with the girls and some friends today, met a lady called Olive in the little church and had a drink in the local pub

So all seems good, except that the enormity of what we are about to do is really getting to me. It has taken us nearly 13 years to get this place to feel like home, and now we're just leaving it to make a start elsewhere I want to take the Aga, curtains, carpet and garden with me.....but of course there's no point, it just doesn't fit elsewhere.

Plus I am worried about the cost of it all, such that I have even started to look for more work. I had hoped to realise some cash for the girls, but no chance of that in the current market .........

I have been waiting to put this news on here, hoping I would feel 100% positive, but I have a feeling that until we are settled I am going to feel quite emotional. I am trying not to feel this way, but can't stop.

And....I should feel lucky to be moving to such a lovely place

Signed off by a tired and emotional Lindy

Sleep tight all, maybe I'll be back here soon now I have got this if my chest a bit

Glad to see you are back georgy, we were getting worried about you.

I was so glad to see England win - now, if only France can beat Ireland and England wins its next two matches!

I am now a great believer in inhalations. Evidently this is going to becoming a regular event with me. They do help enormously with colds, hayfever, sore throat. Also, gargling with Difflam (regular, not sore throat preparation) is very effective. End of Dr NY annie's consultation.

I am replanning my herb garden. We have a small plot on the side of the house. Now marking out with bricks where new plants will go. Bought two wonderful looking lavendar plants at the supermarket on Friday. Will plant them out soon. Also need to get about 16 bags of bark chippings! I have tarragon, thyme, rosemary, chives (which seed everywhere), bay tree in a pot. Want to get a few unusual herbs like marjoram and winter and summer savory. Birds are going crazy too!

Very quiet week thank goodness - will catch up on paperwork and do some spring cleaning in the cupboards - my least favourite job!

Have a great day everyone.

Oh lindy........what a horrid feeling....

I think its probably more because you are scared and apprehensive, rather than anything to do with your decision.....

I think you have made the right decision for you and your family, and I am sure you will love your new house. Why cant you take the curtains and a few plants from your current garden with you? Surely it will be a bit exciting to start all over again? We have been in this house now for almost 20 years!!! And part of me would love the challenge of moving and having a blank slate to start all over on.... rather than having to update something that I have already decorated once. and still sort of like, but...it is too tired now....

In any case to some extent the house isn't the main thing, the main thing is your family...and to make sure that you are happy.

But why do you need to work? Surely one of the reasons for moving was to allow you to retire properly? In some respects I wouldn't worry too much about finding money for your girls, they are grown ups and should be starting to fend for themselves. And I say this as someone who would love to have more money for my girls, especially as we have had to fund them through uni etc....but.....we are in an awkward place, we have happily supported them now for nearly 25 years, and put them first most of the time, and now we/I need to think of myself a bit.

Its not as if they are going to be in a particularly unique place is ? it is so frustrating to see that so many young people are stuck at home with parents or have limited prospects with careers and finances. Something drastic is going to have to change. Or our attitudes are going to have to be re-evaluated...

A friend of mine was talking about how they had extended their mortgage to buy an house for their child at uni, on an interest free mortgage, so effectively they were only paying back the interest on it, and had no intention of keeping it after their child finished. I hadn't even considered anything like this, It wouldn't have worked for me in London, but what an ingenious solution.... When we vaguely thought of it....I got stuck on the fact that we wouldn't be able to pay back a repayment mortgage in full, I didn't realise interest only mortgages still existed....

another friend has sold their house, and moved back in with their elderly parents, so that they can give their child and grandson enough money to support their mortgage...which sounded a bit drastic to me.... But I suppose they are all ways of looking around a problem to find a different solution to the most obvious....

anyhow.....I hope you are feeling a bit better and a bit more optimistic about your move ...it sounds exciting....;maybe we can all come and visit you????/

love m xx

nyannie your herb garden sounds lovely. I have some herbs in pots on the patio, but...often have to replace them annually... Some are ok, like the bay and rosemary, and chives, but the rest are hard to keep looking nice, rather than straggly. or dead...!!! My mint is healthy but seems to overrun everything!!

Did anyone else see Dancing on Ice? Ive missed almost all of the series...but Ive loved the last 2 programmes....They are so clever at skating.....beautiful.

The sun has got it's hat on, hip, hip, hip, hooray!!!
Is it just me or does the sun lift everyone's spirits? Spring has finally sprung, the trees are budding and the bulbs are flowering.

I'm finally feeling better and not so tired. I kept falling asleep (even when people were speaking to me) there have been some pretty nasty bugs around this year.

Hope your throat is feeling better today georgy best take Dr nyannie's advice and have a good old gargle.

I have a feeling your garden is absolutely beautiful nyannie, your always so busy in it.

I've been looking at mine and it's looking a bit tired. We're fed up with the 'beach look' in our back garden (the membrane under the gravel has perished) and we're constantly having to weed it now, so now we're thinking of reinstating the grass. It's a huge job though and while we dug it all out and landscaped it ourselves before, we're not going to attempt it this time. Time to get the professionals in - but we need to replace the conservatory first as we've discovered a leak.

All this just to put the house up for sale.

Hi Lindy, so pleased to hear you've found a buyer and also a new home for yourselves, the village sounds lovely.

I know what you mean about leaving your home behind, but you need to remember that you made it a home and you'll make your new house a home too.

I agree with Augusta, taking some things with you will help make it feel more like yours. I'm already taking cuttings and splitting some of my favourite plants and putting them in pots, especially one that have a special meaning to me, like ones that my mum planted and the shrub that my son bought me for Mother's Day when he was seven.

Like Augusta, we've been in the house for over twenty years (twenty eight in October) and for us it's time to move on before we feel too old to be bothered lol.

I wish I was more like nyannie and could be more decisive about chucking things out, we have a mountain of stuff that we're probably never going to need or use. We certainly don't want to pay to move things to a new house and then realize that we don't want them.

Off to start on some spring cleaning and clearing, o/h has an extra long weekend coming up, I can feel a tip trip coming on.

Thanks everyone for your sympathetic posts - as I've said before, you are a lovely lot!

Thankfully things are looking up a bit today. O/h and I have had a good chat about various issues, and we have decided to make more of an effort not to waste money All our lives we have lived somewhat "high on the hog" as a dear Canadian friend puts it, and that has to stop if I am going to properly retire. I have made a start by cancelling my 'Graze' boxes lol but I don't think we'll ever be naturally careful with money......

Re the house, we've now signed all the papers to date and await exchange of contracts. I think this has to be it, o/h is desperate to move and something has to give.....Lena I am sure you are right, we have made five family homes before (one after another) and so there is evidence we can do it again. Just more slowly.......

We chose both house and village very carefully ( the village doesn't even have street lights ) and we have to trust our own judgement. I just would love to have brought the girls up in one place and then moved once to retire.....but you take what comes, don't you?

Augusta I have loved the skating My daughter and I now want a DVD composed entirely of Ray Quinn performances.....

Cheers again everyone

So pleased to hear you are feeling more positive.

We do a budget every 3 months. I also try to save money - yes, I do! We don't buy a lot of clothes, we do have a takeaway but rarely go out for dinner. Our big splurge is to go away at Christmas and we are now cutting it down to three days instead of four. I also do a shopping list and stick to it! We don't buy any ready meals or soups and I have rationalized magazines and newspapers and organizations - if I don't use them I don't renew. My Arts Card is very very useful!

As for your move. My o/h's late mother gave him a beautiful camellia bush for his first home. She also gave him some great shrubs. When he moved he took cuttings of the plants. I too now grow things in pots - cause when we move I want to take my favourite tulip bulbs - China pink and Princess Irene.

Ever major change causes some kind of doubt or fear, but you will be OK. Your daughters are grown up and I bet they don't expect anything from you. Time for you to take a deep breath, relax and enjoy yourself.

Lots of love

My garden is small and I do get joy from it. I only plant drought-tolerant flowers and shrubs and bulbs. Things that don't take a lot of time and effort.

You do have to do a lot to sell a house. I've been making a snag list so that we can fix, paint and tidy things up before we put the house on the market. I hate to say it but I think we will have to pay for new ceilings in the living and dining rooms. I dread to think of what it will cost us to move - my o/h's tools and pieces of equipment will require specialist movers. Think we should start saving NOW!!!!

Our roofers are so busy they can't let me know when they can come until the end of the week

Morning all.

Hope we all have a good day. I am off to the osteopath shortly so won't be able to use my computer for the rest of the day.

Watched Mary Berry yesterday - her steak recipe was the same as the Barefoot Contessa's (I am a devotee of the food channel on Freeview).

Have a lovely day all and hope everyone's stresses and cares go away!

im so glad to hear you are feeling more positive.......

Is this going to be your final move do you think? Its so odd isn't it how differently people see moving. And also how different times affect it. Growing up in the late 60s and 70s many people and families moved frequently.... council .housing estates like Harlow , were built on the premise of familes moving home to accommodate different family stages, so start in a small one bedroom place, move to a 2 bedroom when children came, a 3 bedroom when more children came, and presumably the idea was to move back down the houses again, as people aged and families changed. But as the housing stock all got sold off, I think everything changed!!

I think I am like you , we constantly spend too much .....on silly things...we waste far too much food for instance...I too need to make a budget and stick to it sensibly...

I live with someone who has spreadsheets for just about everything, he knows where every single penny goes. To be fair we probably wouldn't be where we are today without his careful watch on the pennies.

I have been known to hide receipts now and again.

I always shop with a list and stick to it for the most part, although I do take advantage of offers when they're on. Actually forgot my list last week, felt very odd going round without it. Amazingly I got everything that was on it.

Off now to give the big match my undivided attention and pray for a miracle.

And sadly the miracle never came to pass...... Sorry Lena and Arsenal
