I would love to retire..............I don't mind doing some work, but can think of lots of other more interesting things to do!!

bad luck about your knee lindy. It is frustrating when you cant do things, I still remember my broken foot, of the time of BB11, that had me unable to move around for 6 weeks, and I got so frustrated and so impatient!! I don't know what I am going to do as I get older. I spose you just have to keep going as best you can.....

are your daughters on holiday together?

ive just read 'My sisters keeper' the imaginary story about the younger sister born to help out her older sister who has leukaemia as a blood donor etc. it was really interesting.

isn't it the Monaco grand prix this weekend?

Morning all

Frustrating is the word, Augusta, the state of my knee (and other joints) has to be taken into account when planning anything now. Should teach me patience, but I'm not sure it works that way.......

My daughters are on holiday separately. One's on a 'hen do' in Ibiza (rather her than me lol), and the other's in Portugal with her boyfriend (which sounds much better!)

Yes, I think it is the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend. May be an unpopular view here but I've always liked Lewis Hamilton .....

Got to go, shopping and cooking to do, friends round for dinner.

Have a good weekend all

Lindy xx

Morning all

We should be seeing King Lear but both of us got up feeling like death warmed up. It is a pity, but better take it easy than get pneumonia.

So, today will be spent reading Cousin Bette (Balzac) and catching up with Harry Potter last episode - luckily we have enough leftovers to see us through today.

Feeling blue that our visitors have left.

Hope we get more news of John.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday - French Open starts tomorrow so guess where I will be?

ok wonderful friends....advice needed...

.we have a family wedding coming up on my OH's dad side of the family. Which I was really looking forwards to going to. OHs dad is estranged from his family and doesn't really get on with them any more, as they don't like my MiL that much, and hated it when he remarried about 10 years ago. But we have been lucky enough to keep in close contact and go along to family events and weddings etc.

OHs dad and wife were invited to the wedding, but now I hear that my OHs dad isn't going to come, but his wife would like to go and is going to come and stay with us, and come along with us to the wedding by herself.

Is it just me or is this extremely odd......? And how on earth am I going to deal with it??

This is odd. Don't know what to suggest but if they were invited to the wedding, they would have to RSVP to the family so the family knows. They probably also know that you have kept in close contact with the family. Just act normally I guess and don't worry about it.

Maybe the thing to do is ask one of those agony aunts or find a book of etiquette that would mention it.
augusta92
25-05-2014
I don't think an agony aunt or etiquette book is going to have an answer to this one!! I think you are right though, best to just let it ride itself out and not worry about it.........its not really that important. I will just go to the wedding and have a great time regardless!!

watching the news this morning is actually quite scary. I know I grew up with the cold war, and there have always been wars going on in different places in the world. But somehow everything at the moment feels unsettled. There is an absence of a major dominant power. and lots and lots of angry scuffles going on around the world. Ukraine, Thailand, Kenya, etc etc....

and this awful case of yet another student killing in the USA. What on earth is going on with the world? Lots of comments about gun crime, how we treat people/teenagers with mental illnesses, and how society expects the relationships between girls and boys to go....as this kid doing the shooting, seems to have had a major problem with women and with being a virgin at 22???

Morning all.

Well, back to normality - do some cleaning and watch the French Open. So glad Federer won.

I honestly don't know what to say about the shootings augusta - there is such a strong gun lobby which is supported by the Constitution of the US - the right to bear arms. The checks before getting guns and licenses for guns needs urgent attention. Something needs to be done - urgently!!!

Well, best go and do some tidying up. Place looks like a tip. We have put the heating back on as it is so damp!

Have a good day alll.

morning everyone....its a miserable day with the rain, but im due to go and have my hair done, so today Is going to be a lovely day..

I think the wedding thing is sorted....which is good...

and has anyone else seen the Wolf of Wall street? with Leonardo Di Caprio? it is an incredible film and very good to watch. But ........the morality stinks.......the idea of this wall street stockbroker, deliberately setting out to fool people out of their savings, so he can live a wonderful extravagant lifestyle!!!

I have a feeling that when I grew up, films had to have some kind of underlying morality, ie crime could never be seen to pay, so in films like The Italian job, with Michael Caine, the robbers ended up with the gold they had stolen, almost being lost down a ravine. Thereby illustrating the idea that crime isn't really worth it.

I think that kind of subtext has been lost completely. So some films leave me feeling almost bemused. Both the wolf of Wall street and American Hustle have left me feeling the same kind of way. In a way I quite like the films, but .....I really don't like the cold hearted single minded way they present the world.

The real life guy in The Wolf of Wall street, Jordan B.... acquired money from clients in the millions, probably from loads of people who could ill afford to lose that money, yet he is portrayed as a hero, living an absolutely amazing life, and although he lost his wife and family and served 3 years in jail, he is now having a wonderful life again, as a motivational speaker, encouraging everyone to sell sell sell......!!!

Pleased the wedding stuff is sorted, have you a outfit ready are you going hat or no hat ?

Enjoy having your hair done, it does make one feel so much better.

Not seen Wolf of Wall Street, but my son has and he also down loaded it.
He told me to watch it, but did put down a warning, about the language and stuff,
but said it was very much worth a watch. So when i find the right evening, it will be
first on my list, and i shall let you know, what i thought of it. xxx

So sad to see another shooting in the U.S
i would love to see something done, but also understand, that its a very
difficult with your Constitution. But i agree they need to tighten the laws of ownership,
it can,t be right that unstable kids, can get their hands on these weapon, so easily.

Have a nice day Nyannie

Morning all

Another damp day!

Plan to finish my letter of complaint to Aviva today - and clean the bathrooms! Yuch!!!

I do hope John comes over - who knows, maybe with a girlfriend/wife?

Not much more to say so I am back to bed for a while - still don't feel great.

Have a lovely day despite the weather all.

its nearly the next series of BB isn't it? I wonder if John will come over as part of the preseason publicity? that way he might get a free trip to the uk?

how much does it cost to travel to and from Australia? A friend of mine was talking about a recent trip around Europe, by train, and it made me realise how lucky I have been to travel around quite a bit. apparently the Reightsmuseum in Amsterdam has recently reopened after being closed for 10 years or so...Anyone else want to do a trip to Amsterdam to go and see it?

Think you can do a flight to Australia for about £700+

I am definitely not watching BB this year. Cannot stand Rylan.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has been refurbished and I definitely want to see it sometime. I lived in Amsterdam for 8 months before I came here. I loved it.

Was the Rijksmuseum closed that long? I thought it was only a year. There are some amazing paintings there. You can also visit the Van Gogh museum which is a wonder!

Ah memories. . .

Best get going as I am off to London shortly.

im going to London tomorrow.....to see the Matisse exhibition...which im looking forwards to....

almost at the end of the week.......where does the time vanish to?

I think I might try and watch a bit of BB this year...it is often fascinating on some level, I do love people watching......

I was having a fascinating discussion with my dad today. He was a child, aged about 4 or 5 at the start of the second world war, and he lived on an estate in North London, and the stories that he can tell about growing up in London during the bombing are absolutely horrendous.

im trying to encourage him to write some of these stories down, but... Im not sure that he is that keen. he hasn't spoken that much about his experiences....but stories like being evacuated and disliking it so much , that he walked back to London along the railway line, or the day the messersmitt chose to shoot at all the children walking home from school are awful . According to him, London was bombed so much, almost everything broke down and lawlessness and crime were everywhere.

But what really interested me today, was that he said at the end of the war, all the children who had spent the war in London, had to go and see a psychologist to be tested on the effects of the war on them. and I thought what an interesting study this must have been, to study the effects of the horrors of war on children. And I also thought it might be interesting to compare the results of children who had actually lived through a horrific war, with things like the effect of realistic war games and films that some children today see.

has anyone else heard of this research? it was carried out by The Tavistock clinic in London at the end of the second world war...presumably in about 1945?

Back from London. Spent a small fortune in Selfridge's Food Hall. Also had the best cappucino at the small ice cream concession. Yummy looking ice cream but I was so good.

Busy weekend and I am currently baking banana bread as we have guests coming for coffee on Saturday morning - and then we are going to stay with friends. Either feast or famine!

Have a good evening everyone.

I did hear of the research. The Tavistock Clinic used to do a lot of very interesting work.

I think it a great idea to have your father write down his experiences. My father was in the CBI during WWII and all I have are a couple of letters. It is part of your family history.

how is everyone?

At last,
D.S has not been allowing me in

hope all had a good weekend shall read back in a mo

but why, when one thing breaks down
other pieces of equipment, feel the need to join in
lost two pumps in the last 5 day one to the hot water
the other to the pool, and now the house smells of chlorine
plumber has been in for the water, visited for half a hour, changed pump and charge us £240 pounds

and now my car petrol gauge is not working all these things are sent to try us, but why all at once

the builders across the road are driving me nuts, keep blocking our drive and i
have now reported them twice, for working to long hours, Sat is the main
problem, but the inspector has come out, and given them a warning, so thats good.

the sunny weather has been a very nice treat

and finally i realized my son is now all grown up, when he sat down with his Nan
and explained all the contracts on the purchase of their new house and what
they needed to check with the lawyer, sort of saw him in a different light, if you
know what i mean, no longer boy, man with career (Scary)

have a good day all xxxx
