Welcome back augusta - we missed you!

Well, Christmas is well and truly over in this household. All the cards are in recycling, baubles and candles put away for another year - sad really!

Have to do a good clean in a minute. Then back to my book - a history of the French and Indian war.

Spent most of yesterday playing banagram with o/h. It is addictive. We discovered the game when we were on the boat and played it with some nice Australians.

Busy week coming up. London twice and then some friends popping in for lunch on their way back from Devon.

Have a nice day all.

we were all fine after the holiday. in a way the lessone beforehand made me feel even more cautious than I was, so that I just wanted to improve gradually rather than take any risks...

And of course I still needed to stop to take photos, and to have frequent coffee and hot chocolate stops...

what has the weather been doing? it sounds as if it has been dreadful while we ve been away.

And who is in the latest edition of CBB, it sounds like an interesting line up, but I haven't yet seen any of it....?

We watched Sherlock last night, and will be watching tonight as well.

Did anyone have any interesting new years resolutions? I think the one I might manage to achieve is to declutter the place and throw out some of our junk....

Morning all.

How are we all? Looking forward to Saturday.

The only resolution I've made is to be more productive and try and lose some weight. I look like two-tonne Tilly. Will start by cutting down/eliminating bread. I love it!

Busy week - going into London tomorrow and Wednesday and of course Saturday!

Just started a book about the French and Indian War. A bit dry, but it is a period I know very little about.

Wonder if John has made any resolutions?

morning all....so did anyone else watch Sherlock? it was brilliant.
And to top off a day of TV, ''Catch me if you can'' was on before it...I love that film, Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hanks are so so good in it. To think that it was based on a real life character, Frank Abignale was an incredible person to defrauds banks out of millions of pounds when he was only 16!!!!!

Morning all.

Going to London today to see the Georgian exhibition and tomorrow the Chinese Painting - then roofers and then my friends visit us for lunch.

Winds still howling and heard some heavy rain - our youngish olive tree is all bent!

Anyway, hope you have a lovely day all.

What book was it Lindy?

have a lovely day in London nyannie and thanks for the details for the thread meet....

im looking forwards to it .

Georgy your apple Tv thing sounds amazing, but, they end up so complicated I don't know half of what these gadgets do. my clever phone was a nightmare when we were away, as I couldn't get a decent 4G signal, and it really showed how little I know about really making it work correctly. But it did take some amazing photos..

Which somehow were transferred onto the TV for a slideshow when we got home....but......it took 3 or 4 people to do this, and I have no idea how to do it again!!!

Morning all

The book was 'The Dinner' by Hermann Koch. It has been a worldwide hit, made into a play etc. However we all found it extremely unpleasant to read. Maybe the violence in it challenges our cozy domestic assumptions???

What does the Apple TV do? I've always fancied the sound of one, but of course I have no idea how it works!

Anyway lots of chores to do today....need to set up the new year, as it were

Have a good day all

its just a little box that you plug in to the tv and it connects with apple comps, laptops or ipads
so anything you have down loaded
such as your photo's, films, or tv series you can now watch on your big screen tv
it cost £99 pounds, saves you all surrounding a small screen to see or watch something
its a very clever idea

Ooooh!! Sounds brilliant

I'm just a bit concerned though, because we got an 'on demand' box via BT WiFi which is supposed to mean that you can watch any type of catch up TV on the big screen......we have never quite got it to work properly.

I wonder whether you can have Apple TV and BT WiFi on demand at the same time?!?

I need an IT advisor

Looking forward to the meet on Saturday xx

I too would need an IT advisor for the apple! I have no patience so my poor o/h has to sort everything out.

Got back from London about 3 ish - cannot believe the flooding. Sonning Bridge is closed and every field we passed has ducks and swans swimming on it. Terrible!!!

Off to the V&A tomorrow. Looking forward to Saturday - won't buy anything as we are on an economy drive to pay for our roof!!!

Have a lovely evening all.

Morning all.

Spoke to a friend in the village who lives near a flood plain - which now has houses on it - the water is up to his patio so he was spending last night sandbagging!

Looking forward to Saturday.

I have been thinking about all the latest gadgets - when I was growing up we had hobbies - stamp, postcard collecting, walking, camping etc etc. Nowadays people can't seem to exist without their smartphones, apps etc. Not a criticism, it just seems to me that perhaps imagination, particularly in children, is being stifled. Maybe I am just a luddite.

Morning....As regards gadgets I think times are changing..

What scares me the most, especially as I love history and things from the past, like old toys and books etc...is the built in obsolencence. Everything becomes out of date so quickly, especially computer games and systems, so that for instance my wii fit is now ancient and I cant buy any new games or fitness or exercise routines. without updating the whole system. And this is the time of year, I would quite like to get a new exercise game to play.

It all then goes into landfill....which to me seems a massive waste. When we got a new TV the old one, which was working perfectly well, just got dumped..

Funny you should post this about landfill. There was an article in one of the papers about how you should repair your fridges and other white goods rather than throw them out. Both my o/h and I come from the 'make do and mend' generation. We keep things going long after the guarantee packs up.

Just had some bad news about a dear friend so best go. . .

Good evening and a belated Happy New Year to all my lovely friends on JJat.

Pleased to read that everyone is safe and well, weather is certainly unpredictable at the moment.

Good to hear you had a good holiday augusta and relieved you got back safely without the need for plaster of paris.

The start to my new year could have been better. Friday saw me on a twenty two mile, fifty minute trip across the flooded Marsh Road (it's not called that for nothing)in appalling weather in the back of an ambulance to what is now our local A&E.

I won't bore you with the details but after four hours in A&E I was transferred to the basement where after another hour I was prodded and poked in a girl's important little places before having a procedure without anaesthetic and finally sent back out in the wind and the rain at twelve forty five am with not an ounce of dignity left.

We got home just before two am and o/h is nine pounds and sixty pence lighter in the pocket after paying parking fees!!!

I have a scan booked for Monday morning, so I'm hoping for better weather.

I must say though that the nurses and doctors were wonderful.

Have been taking it easy as instructed by everyone.

Need to read back to catch up properly with all the news.

Oh Lena I'm so sorry to hear you haven't been well, and also that you had such a traumatic visit to hospital. You must take it easy! And let's hope the scan leads to some helpful treatment, and in more comfortable circumstances

And there was me thinking you might have been flooded... I knew something was up. All the best to you and belated happy new year wishes

Certainly is....

Even more roads have been closed around here due to flooding, and some flood barriers are about to be breached, leading to house flooding Thank goodness we live on a hill

Worst of all, though, the rail service to Paddington has been suspended until Friday at least, due to flooding ....they can't run bus replacements because of the state of the roads. So, I know it's selfish, but I'm just hoping that things are back to normal by Saturday...

Will keep you posted.....

Stay dry everyone xx
