My daughter has an iphone 4 which is still on the original software from when she got it. She has itunes installed on an old pc with limited hard drive space and despite several attempts at making space she cannot install the latest itunes software.

If she takes her phone to an Apple shop will they be able to update to the latest version for her? I know she is concerned about losing contacts when updating.

They should be able to yes.
To free up more space run Ccleaner here http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Also turn system restore off and then on again.
If its Windows XP, right click My Computer and click properties. Then the system restore tab.
In Vista, same right click but its then under System protection.

Good advice above. Also try going into control panel> add remove programmes and there's surely one or two programmes that are not used anymore, uninstall these to free up more space.

Apple would update it for you but trying to sort the pc would be better as you can do future updates/backups through iTunes then.

If you really can't free up space maybe take it to a shop and get another hard drive fitted. It wouldn't cost too much.

If you ask Apple to update the phone, make sure you've backed it up first - as they may wipe it. You may not be able to back up the phone properly if your PC is totally full.

It is an old Win XP machine that has windows and few programmes on a small c drive with a much larger second drive for data and other programmes and unfortunately she installed itunes originally on the small c drive.

She says she has tried unistalling programmes but I will ask her to try your suggestions. She does not close to me otherwise I would take a look myself.

As your iPhone can only be registered against one computer it would get wiped if the Apple store updated it. Make sure there is a backup first.

Or if your hard drive is full look at sorting that out. Computers often have duplicate/phantom files that take up unnecessary storage. There are various hard drive clean up programs that help.

Once the iPhone is updated it no longer needs a computer to update and can be done on iCloud.
