humax box missing channels

Hi there, my father inlaws box was missing the majoriy of his channels but most had the programme info (data stream) I did a re-boot via the rocker switch at teh back and now most if not all are now there. It's a foxsat HDR but it only has one feed and I think this may have something to do with it.
Even the menu had most services greyed out and re-stored with the re-boot,. he always has problems with this box and I have the same one but a bigger memory and do not have any problems to speak of so my money is on the single feed, any input about this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Has he got tuner 1 out connected to tuner 2 in with a short piece of coax as shown in the manual ?

Operating on one cable shouldn't have any effect on the channels you get. Sounds like a dish/lnb issue. A list of the missing channels would help.

When you say the menu I guess you are referring to the channel list? It will grey out any channels you can't tune to due to tuner unavailability, so one explanation would be the box was recording at the time (even if just via an accidental press of the record button) and the reboot obviously terminated the recording and restored the ability to select any channel in the list.

But aside from that do follow Graham's advice above to make sure the loop-through cable is present and connected correctly, which will ensure the box is as capable as possible given the one LNB feed.

Hi there, yes I fitted a loop through cable! didn't think of that, I would say at ther time I checked his box most of the BBC channels and a host of others were missing, I mean as well as no channel there was no channel info!

I feel a new dish and lnb plus twin feed coming on, His present dish was fitted during the discounted digital change over offer, will need about 20mm of shotgun cable to sort hime out and get a new dish with LNB to suit.

WF65 shotgun is not really suitable for runs over 10m. Use two WF100 cables.

Download this .htm file and open it in a browser. Choose one channel from each transponder and note any you can't watch (with no recording taking place).

Dish on south side of house, living room on north side of house, solid floor and mid terrace so dish about 3m off ground so 2,5 to gutter, probably about 4.5m to apex x 2 them down to the ground again 5m the into house allow 1.5m

Total 18m so 20 to be safe, might be able to route through loft but I think the soffit is concrete.

Thanks again

I used over 10m of shotgun (the stuff Sly use) to get to my back bedroom and it works ok, probably around 12 to 14m.

Thanks for the link

It depends where you are, you may get away with it (at the expense of break up in adverse weather and depending on how large your dish is) in the Southern UK. Less so the further North you are.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cablespecs.htm

The dish location and height is not relevant, if it can see the satellite the height is irrelevant (assuming perfect alignment). The amount of signal received at the lnb is purely decided by the dish size and lnb performance. After this signal loss is down to coax cable performance and distance from the lnb. As a guide every 3.5 dB down to the loss in cable halves the signal.
