Well they do have a few melodic moments, which make them more listen-able and they are Scandinavian

That always helps but they're Norwegian. I prefer Swedish & Finnish bands.

And yes, I know the Finns aren't Scandinavian but you know what I mean

Probably not since the 80s, if I'm honest.

I think I'm a little old for that

In any case, I was never Goth. I was a punk - dog collars, spiky hair, zips & safety pins

Actually, I do dress all in black, always, just not goth style. And my hair is dyed blonde

The Ramones, a long time ago. They were really poor live. No connection with the audience & all the songs sounded the same. A lot of people drifted away after about 20 minutes, me included.

I only ever go see bands live that I really like and wouldn't dream of walking out of the gig, but I did go to the Carling festival year after year so experienced alot of acts I'd never seen before.

I remember being particularly bored during Queens of the Stone Age. The songs seemed to go on forever and the whole set would possibly have been exciting for a lifelong fan who loves everything about them, but to someone who is unfamiliar with them it came across very flat and self-indulgent.
My legs started to ache and I was starting to get agitated because I was that bored. I lasted as long as I could before wandering off to check out the smaller stages.

Hi there. I very rarely venture into this section of DS because I know it is just full of pap, so it was a nice surprise to bump into this thread. Ever since the Classic Rock magazine forum died a year or so ago I’ve been hoping to find a place to discuss decent music with decent like-minded people. This may well be it, as long as between us we keep the thread there or thereabouts.

So anyway, I’m primarily into the classic rock sound of the 80s, with a very strong leaning towards the blues-based stuff. So Joe Bonamassa is currently king in my world. I’ll link to some of my faves as time goes on.

I’ve skimmed the 20-odd pages of this thread (that is 20-or-so, not that they were all odd…) and to pick up on a couple of recent comments:

I was a student in Newcastle in the late 80s so the Mayfair was like a home from home for me. Great memories of the Friday rock nights, and yes it was a fantastic venue to see a band – big enough to get a great atmosphere but small enough to be able to fight your way to the front and get up close and personal. Some standout nights there were Bon Jovi (before they lost their way), Ozzy (after he had lost his way, but still great material) and Shy (really, really should have been bigger).

I have always loved Billy Joel too, particularly around Nylon Curtains. I didn’t know about his early rock career, but was reminded that he did guest on a Twisted Sister track, Be Chrool To Your Scuel, on Come Out and Play (their last decent album).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWAJG71Urbw

But anyway, I’ll leave you for now with the greatest rock vocalist of all time (imho, obviously) delivering his masterpiece.

If you haven’t heard this for a while:
a. What have you been up to that’s better than this?
b. Sit back and revel in the glory

You're going to fit in here very well

Whilst I'm definitely revelling in the glory of your link, I have to admit, I preferred Ozzy I tend to like a more raw quality in a voice, rather than someone who, like Dio, is just too technically perfect.

Now this is raw

Black Sabbath - War Pigs (Live in Paris 1970)

Fantastic

I will concede that Ozzy's stagecraft left something to be desired though
AlexR!

Ah yes, but his stagecraft then was positively polished compared to 1986 when I saw him (Ultimate Sin tour). Then he just staggered from one side of the stage to the other, vaguely mumbling. Not a lot was going on inside, frankly. We all still lapped it up, though, and I was pleased to have seen a legend, not expecting him to be around for much longer, and certainly not for him to become a reality tv star...
Sadly, I don't have high hopes for the new album.

Well, the album's going to stand or fall on the quality of the songs, isn't it? Ozzy's vocal can be tidied up as necessary. I guess he must be doing ok, he headlined Graspop festival, (above Slayer) last year.

Further to something dodger posted a while back.

Police in Manchester have said they will begin recording offences against members of alternative subcultures in the same way they do attacks based on race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity.

The Greater Manchester police force – the first in Britain to take the step – said that "goths, emos, punks and metallers" and members of other alternative groups have often endured abuse.

What do you all think of this 'significant' news in the hard rock / metal / prog world

TEAMROCK PURCHASES CLASSIC ROCK AND METAL HAMMER FOR £10.2MILLION >>>> http://www.stereoboard.com/index.php..._campaign=news

http://weareteamrock.com/press.php

Hope they 'at least' do as good a job as Future Publishing has done over the last few years as one of the leading media representatives in this area of music in the UK

Noticed they released news of opening a Radio station on National Digital One as well
http://weareteamrock.com/D1launch.pdf

Hope this will mean increased exposure of 'none watered down' rock music to the nation / world.

What are your initial reactions ??

If it means that Metal Hammer will cease to be so f*cking po faced & elitist about anything remotely tuneful/clean voiced then that can only be a good thing. Otherwise, it won't affect me at all.

The radio station looks like an interesting development. Anything that gives metal/hard rock a wider platform can only be seen as a positive

Little concerned whether they will keep Classic Rock offshot Prog magazine going myself or 'homogonise' it all back in with the parent magazine again - slightly different music niches as far as I'm concerned.Slightly conerned with the Corporate back-ground of the named Directors. Not so sure about the GMG (Gaurdian Music Group) connections which representation of rock music hasn't been much better than NME overall over the last decade. At least the may have the business accumen - if they have a slightly hands off approach & let their music commentatators / DJ's have freedom to represent their chosen music honestly & not overly commercially (which plagues the music industry at the moment) may work out well for UK 'true' rock fans.

Agree with what you say about Metal Hammer to an extent, although hope it doesn't go in a Kerrang direction.Metal Hammer has built up a loyal readership - can't alienate those readers who have supported the publication.

Quote Billy Anderson '"All rock stations in the UK seem to play the same rock songs. That's fine but we are not a classic rock station. Instead, we celebrate the whole spectrum of rock music. Too many great bands go unplayed.' - that really sound's promising though

Agree with this. They were very boring when I saw them.

I saw Eyehategod a while back and had to leave as I thought I was going to pass out from the heat.

I've left early when watching Arch Enemy. The venue they played at had really clean sound and it was just all very boring. Stampin' Ground opened for them and they really showed them up.

I've only left early at festivals, never at gigs, well only one gig, that was because I went to watch the support band and it was a free gig!

I did leave before the Slipknot encore at Sonisphere in 2011 just because it was the last day and I was soaked through the bone and I was knackered! Half wish I stayed, but I was also glad I got back to the tent early and missed the final crush of leaving!
