Joseph Stalin's Order 227 established the creation of several penal battalions (shtrafbats) which were placed at the most dangerous positions of the front lines. Those battalions consisted of soldiers accused of disciplinary problems and political prisoners from Gulag labor camps. Being drafted to a penal battalion was a de facto death sentence for the 427,910 people convicted to penal units until 1945. Read about
