Metal is not the only music I like, but when I say I like metal to somebody, they expect me to like bands like Metallica or Iron Maiden and I'm not a fan of either. I hate the stereotyped, 'acceptable' face of metal.

I like things that break the mould, in everything really, not just music, and not because I'm pretentious, or trying too hard, but just because I like it.

Which bands do it for you then?

I've been meaning to check out Soulfly for a while. Where should I start?

I like their self titled debut album the best. They have a tinge of world music in their instrumentation

Type O Negative were one of my favourite bands. Sad about the death of Peter Steele . He'd be missed

Yes, he's a loss

Thanks for the Soulfly link. Not my thing, I'm afraid. I see what you mean about 'world music' though.

Another Northern Ireland band for ye

http://kashis1.bandcamp.com/

And another

http://astralnaut.bandcamp.com/

The local music scene is looking good at the moment and not just hard rock/heavy metal either.

I would just like to add that I am like the poster up the page who hates that Metallica are seen as the accepted face of metal music (I do like Iron Maiden though). I find them terribly overrated and have never quite gotten their appeal.

How about something from south of the border? Can't believe I haven't Stanned for this lot yet. I saw them live last month in the Sophie tent at Bloodstock & became an instant fan. This is the first track released from their upcoming album 'Damned When Dead', due for release later this month.

I would assume with a user name of "Ænima", Tool, as it is the title of their second album.

As it happens, Tool are my favourite band as well and if we're really lucky their fifth album will come out before the end of the decade!!

I think they are the "acceptable face" of metal simply because they have enjoyed some commercial success in the singles chart, so "the masses" have heard of them.

i prefer music towards the more Progressive and Symphonic end of the rock/metal spectrum which, to 99% of the population of this country is a completely closed book. But, like Real ale to a lager drinker, when you let people hear someone like Delain or Within Temptation suddenly they see a whole new world open in front of them.

I must admit that, whilst I've heard of Tool, I know nothing about them. I've just checked out their Wiki page & they seem to be influenced by a lot of bands that & like, so I'll be checking them out further. Especially given that I originally cut my musical teeth on art rock, back in the early 70s.

The only Prog I've really tried out is Opeth & I find them boring tbh. Within Temptation don't really do it for me but I do like Delain.

Love it when the stupid pop press are proved wrong. All sorts of talk last week that A7X getting a No. 1 album proved the death of the albums chart because a "nobody" band got the No. 1 spot, and they would have the biggest ever fall from a No. 1 the week later.

They only dropped to No. 8.

I find it utterly depressing that a band like A7X appears to be regarded as the future of metal, tbh.

Not really any different to Metallica being the accepted face of metal, to be fair. I find that pretty depressing too.

Not a fan either (I like one or two songs) but at least they're actually Metal.

But then The Sun have just reviewed the new Katatonia album, Dethroned & Uncrowned, and gave it 4.5/5 so perhaps time are changing!!!

I only know this because Katatonia said so on their Facebook page!!

As for A7X, the new album is OK, although their earlier stuff is better. I saw them on their last tour, but that was because they co-headlined with Stone Sour!!

Yes, I will be seeing them at Bilston next month. Reviews of the Touchstone album have been good so far, at least the ones I know about.

I will be @ Bilston too!!

All the reviews I've heard of the new Touchstone album, Oceans of Time, are very, very positive.

Have you heard Touchstone are doing the Trinity Live mini-festival @ Leamington Spa and London next May?

The idea is three bands each playing one entire album as their set. For this first one it is:

Magenta playing Seven
Touchstone playing Discordant Dreams
The Reasoning playing Awakening

Tickets are £20 and we've already got our tickets for that too!!
