Iron Maiden have never been exactly fashionable: too mainstream for punk, too scruffy for New Wave, too hairy and loud for pop. But it seems the classic British metal act is very good at turning metal into gold.

In a report published on Friday by the London Stock Exchange, the group – formed in Leyton, east London in the 1970s – has been cited as one of the UK's fastest growing music firms, helping to pull the UK from economic heart failure into recovery.

A friend of a friend runs his own small business and belongs to a local business club. Every month they meet for lunch and have a guest speaker. A few months ago Bruce Dickinson was the guest speaker and have a talk on how, to maintain their success, Iron Maiden have had to change from purely a band in to a structured business. He said everything they do now is a business decision. For example, despite appearances the reason why they have their own aircraft for touring is because when they do a world tour, and they are one of the very few bands that truly do a world tour, hiring their own aircraft is the most cost-effective way to transport the people and equipment needed for the tour from one country to another.

He said it has the additional benefit of creating good publicity for the band but there is a cold, commercial, business logic behind it.

As far as I can tell that is a real listing! For two standing tickets! Not for them to come to your place and play just for you in your living room, just two standing tickets for the O2! I'm a particular fan of the 4 thousand pound processing fee Anyone wanna go halfsies?

I'm more in to the Prog/Symphonic end of the spectrum these days, so the likes of Within Temptation, Delain, Riverside, Nightwish, etc.

The next gig for me is Halestorm on Sunday in Cardiff so really looking forward to that!
You might really like Suncrown! Have a listen http://www.supapass.com/suncrown

Yes, as if they don't already have more than enough money.

I wonder if it was a cold, commercial, business logic, on their European tour back in the summer, to limit the decibels of their support acts & keep them off the big screens, when playing large arenas & stadiums (50,000+ capacity). This meant that, effectively, only a couple of thousand people at the front could engage with the support acts, whilst, presumably, everyone else stayed at the bars, drinking lots of lovely Trooper beer.

Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that, as much as I love Metallica I think they should take a break from festivals for a bit

Why's that a problem though? Apparently they're allowing the fans to vote on the setlist, so that might mix things up a bit

Suppose it was the build up to 'huge announcement'.

Could be good choosing a setlist, few songs I would defo get rid of that they play all the time 'Seek and Destroy' for a start

Of course there's always the danger that everyone could take the piss & vote for Lulu & St Anger

Out of respect for Lou Reed I don't think they would ever play the Lulu stuff. I like a Cpl of songs on St Anger, I am probably in the minority admitting that

What would your ideal setlist be then? I think I read they do 17 songs.

No particular order

Eye of The Beholder
Dyers Eve
Mama Said
The Unforgiven
The God That Failed
Hero of the Day
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Until it Sleeps
Turn The Page
Orion
My Friend of Misery
....And Justice for All
The Memory Remains
Fade To Black
Escape
Sad But True
Fight Fire with Fire

I quite like the look of that

I don't understand your point. :s

Why would Iron Maiden do that? It would be the organisers who would make those decisions but then it's easier to blame the headliners I suppose......

I wish they both would but, sadly, it seems as though a great many British rock music "fans" will only go to a festival if either Metallica or Iron Maiden headline.

Phew, there's a lot of choice these days. Let's go with this.

Intro: The Ecstacy Of Gold.

Opener: Creeping Death, then

For Whom The Bell Tolls.
Disposable Heroes.
Sad But True.
Harvester Of Sorrow.
That Was Just Your Life.
No Remorse.
The Struggle Within.
Am I Evil.
Devils Dance.
The Unforgiven.
Nothing Else Matters.
2 X 4.
Damage Inc.

Encore:
One
Seek And Destroy
Battery.

There you go. Just one cover version and no "Enter Sandman". Nearly all the albums represented and, hopefully, something for everyone.

Afte all the pre-gig beers, which track do you go to the toilet during?

Well yes, the business people behind them, rather than the band members themselves.
