I am curious about this box (lite version)
What exactly is available in the UK? I have googled and searched but can find little in the way of solid facts....

It's a great little box. But sadly, not much for the UK.
You get the BBC iPlayer (but missing ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5, which is quite a big deal) You get Netflix (but missing Lovefilm) You get Now TV if that floats your boat And you get Crackle, which is a free service with ads, but a limited library. But that is about it for good UK TV services outside of all the games, spotify etc. Still, Roku have said they are "working" to get the other main FTA catch-up services, but to be honest, they have said that for a long time. Still, it should come eventually. If you can hold out, and don't mind the more expensive model, wait until the Roku 3 arrives. That comes with some nice new features like the headphone jack inside the motion control remote, better wifi, more grunt and is still a very fair price. |

I love my Roku. It's good for catching up on some netcast content that I previously watched on YouTube (twit.tv, IGN and Revision3), and there's a plethora of channels showing older, foreign and cult movies. But I have to admit I mostly use it for Netflix, Now and iPlayer.

I have a roku and you can also add "private" channels. These are channels that although roku have checked and Ok'd the content is not what roku want on their main App Store. So porn, bassically although there's also so e crazy stuff on there to.
You just get the channel code and add to your roku via the you roku account at roku.com. |

I haven't tested this myself, but I believe so. There is a USB port, and you need to install a Roku Channel called "USB Media Player" and then this should work.
Alternatively, you can use the Plex Channel to access content in your Network (from your externally located Plex server) |

Thanks for that if i can hook up my hard drive that would be good as ive got quite a lot of films with the dvd cover art which i would hate to lose.
Can I just say, that if you go to all the trouble of collecting DVD art, then maybe Plex is for you? Plex is a great piece of software which gives you quite a professional looking environment to play back your own material. The catch is, is that it requires a bit of work to set-up - basically, every file must be named correctly according to their conventions, and poster artwork (aka your DVD covers) is essential. This is really easy to do for some people, but others don't like the work. Still, if you don't mind naming things and keeping images for your films and TV shows, then this really may be an idea. Plex is free, and you can test it out by installing the server on your PC or Mac as a start. (And then test out a Plex client on the same computer) |
