Looks like another classic about to be butchered.
The only thing to cling on to is that the recent Deus Ex wasn't half bad, in fact it was a pretty good game. |

The only Thief game I played was Deadly Shadows on the Xbox and it was great! Once I got into it I couldn't put it down.

Oh... dear sweet Jebus. Deadly Shadows was a disgrace! A schandra and a scmielzing! Not but a pale and abject epigone of real Thief! An abomination!...
...but I kid. ...to some degree. It really wasn't as bad as those, like me, who hold dear T1 and T2 sometimes (always! if you aren't to be accused of sacrilege) would say it was. It was of course a great game, even if it wasn't as great as it ought to have been. So, Thief 1 (or rather Thief Gold) and Thief 2 must be played. Those of you that have not: Drop what you are doing. Get to GOG. Get the classics. And Join us. Join us, now. You will be caught up -- what with those 2 games proper; and the fan missions you will then want to play each and every one of --- forevermore. Join us. Join us, now. And, hell, by the time Thief (4!) is out? You will have been occupied and not had to suffer through the (lets be honest: mostly bitter-sweetly hilarious) OUTRAGE!!! at what they are doing to Our Precious. |

But will it be as great as it ought to be? There is no doubt that what we have seen and heard so far is promising... and troubling too: There will be sexifying, actioneering, handholding, and other general dumbing-down crap -- capes and chains and focus-pocus... but will we, The Pure, be able to shut off all of that junk and play Thief? |

New screenshots (though, I can almost swear I've seen "C" before)...
A B C I do like these, in that they are much more grimy than a lot of what has been shown so far. Most of what has been shown so far looked too much like "Dishonored" (which is not exactly bad, and not a "rip-off", but still unfortunate and not as promising for the old-school Thief atmosphere). |

Yeah the things they have -- it seems: obliviously -- stated in the latest video are just more and more direct pronouncements of the alarms that have been ringing in the other videos and write-ups. It's plenty disturbing.
I'm glad to see they are being called out by so many. They are getting raked a fair bit. There is a healthy... ffffff uh uh UH UH KING!! OUTRAGE!!!! And the like; to lesser degrees. And yet? There are still a few who put it all down to "marketing", just as sure as shit that everything is fine. So there is amusement to be found in this too. Quote:

Played thief on the original xbox thought it was ok nothing special. I'll give this a go but won't have high expectations.

The 1st 2 games, The Dark Project & The Metal Age really were far superior to Deadly Shadows. Deadly Shadows was a great game, but, seriously, there is good reason that those who have played The Dark Project & [The Metal Age[/b] look askance at it... even if they do get a bit hyper... hyper bollix... hyperbolic. |

Many fans are freaking out over Stephen Russell not being Garrett's (or anyone else's?) voice with this "reboot".
Petition! I think it would be really great to get him back. But I think this is hardly the thing that fans need to waste what ever energy and clout they might have on... campaign for full-on, never-ending, deep-immersion 1st-person perspective; campaign for Hammerites; campaign for Karras's Kids; campaign against actual gameplay deficiencies; CAMPAIGN FOR AN EDITOR (so more FM campaigns can be Built )...

I doubt a petition would help, the devs have already given their reasons, and in the context of their "vision" (aka dollar signs), it makes sense.
Every news that filters through is an arrow through my heart. |

Yeah, petitions are almost always silly; but then, in my opinion, this whole Russell-Or-Die! thing is pretty silly. It really seems so strange that that many people are that wrapped up in this particular issue...
Like a dry-ice arrow? Or something softer... say, a water arrow?

Thief has a job now that we have Dishonored, can't see it giving much.

I'm really looking forward to this. Apart from dishonoured there's been nothing that's come close to the original. But, going back to the original, I thought it was a great game but I must be one of the few who thought the developers got a bit lazy in the latter half. It was the alien creatures that couldn't talk, so no funny and interesting convos to overhear while sneaking, and then there was the caves which lacked the detail of the houses (that was the first game right?).
![]() I can't see this one going in that direction... hopefully. I just can't wait to be hiding in the shadows, chuckling at some funny conversation while pocketing a thing or two. |

Well, we are supposed to be getting our own look at some actual gameplay very soon (as in days ago!). I'm hoping we will get to see something perfectly current and lengthy -- perhaps at least the stuff that all of those that wrote all the previews saw?
Anyway it should keep the hysteria (excitement?) going. I know there isn't much here -- just a few of us DSers it seems -- but, still, the hardcore fans are typically fraught for the most part. |
