Can't stop crying
cs49
09-03-2013
Had a phone call from my mum this morning to say our family dog of 17 years (Labrador) was not well, couldn't move, sickness/diahorea and shaking.

Mum couldn't face taking her to the vet, so I took her & the vet decided the best thing to do was to put her asleep. She was put asleep in my arms while I hugged & kissed her.

I can't stop thinking about it & crying we are all going to miss her so much

OP, I have so much sympathy for you. I imagine it must be awful having to say goodbye to a pet you have loved for 17 years. But according to your post, your beloved dog was beyond any further help - the kindest thing was to have her PTS, although it's something none of us animal lovers like to think about too much. Just remember the good times with your doggie, she knew that you loved her, and you gave her a great life. What more could she have wanted? I know that right now your pain must be immense, but it will lessen with time - a cliche, but it's true. My thoughts are with you. Take care xxxxx

Ah that is so sad, she had a lovely, loving, life for 17 years. And that's a really good age for a labrador. I know it's really hard at the moment, but the pain will ease in time, you did the best and kindest thing for her.

I'm really sorry to hear this and my own recent loss helps me identify with you.

It sounds a bit like what happened with my dog, it was all so sudden I could barely take it in. Sort of like a "here today, gone tomorrow" type situation. I seriously can not think of a single time other than when he died where it really broke my heart. It was just so sad.

My thoughts are with you x

So sorry for your loss, I saw this recently it may help:

"Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker ‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.
He said,”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The Six-year-old continued,
”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

cs49 - I am so sorry. I went through the same thing many years ago when my mother's dog was failing - heart and diabetes. I took her to the vet and stayed with her and cuddled her....and then had to go back to face my mother, who was devastated. Since then I have lost two dogs - and it never gets easier.

In the end - and how ever much we love them - humans live many more years than our dogs - and so if we choose to share our lives with them - then inevitably - there are going to be times we also share their end.

All we can do is love them and give them the best possible lives and then say goodbye when that time comes. Rejoice in their lives, not mourn their deaths.

Just wanted to send you my thoughts and love. We had our boy PTS last monday (its been the longest week ever!). As sad as we are, we have also had a few laughts at remembering the funny things he did.

Time is a healer its a cliche but so true. xx

If one chooses to have a pet we know at some point we are going to have to say goodbye...........

Like most of us here I too have endured the loss of one or more much loved pets..

However, it is not the pain of loss we remember but the joy and love of the years they spent as part of our lives

Hugs at this sad time......

Sorry to hear of your loss OP. We lost our beloved collie when she was 17 and I think it's the only time I've seen my Dad cry. Just remember the good times with your labrador and how happy her life was. xx

To all of you who have lost a beloved pat, my condolences and best wishes. Have you seen the Rainbow Bridge poem.

Our boy is 9 this weekend and we do hope he has many more years before we find out what you are all feeling.
