This is the first year where I didn't mind who won. I stopped minding about halfway through. If I had just turned up for the final I'm sure I would have still thought Luke wasn't a back-biting little boy, that Matt was a showman and Beth was extremely skilled and graceful.
However me not minding who wins means they don't get phone votes. Something had to change. So to be fair I didn't feel Matt was any less or more cocky than last year's winner. Beth was enjoyable but I saw a lot of moves they gave her to do in practice that were good but never used. Luke's attitude seemed to come out of nowhere and suddenly I knew he wasn't going to win. But then so did he.
Matt was consistently a showman, he put on a performance and was enjoyable from the start. I got the impression from the first show that he may suffer from ADD or something similar, comparing him to a bundle of energy and needing more control. That didn't change for me. He always had up tempo numbers (even when he changed genre to ballet) and seemed to be slightly ahead of the beat each time, like he was rushing to get it all out of the way. His footwork, which Robin himself pointed out before, was not right. If you re-watch the group dance you can see he doesn't place his feet on the ice properly. This isn't opinion just something I noticed. The judges sealed his fate.
Beth took all in her stride and even until the end she was having trouble with the 'fun, sexy, vibrant' expressions because it's easier to show sad emotion when you're worried and concentrating anyway. She brought it last night though and delivered everything they asked but was still scored lower. If she'd been scored fairly I'm betting Matt would have had a better chance.
But the producers will be happy with their phone votes and attention right?
However I'm so disappointed with the follow-up this morning and how much they just brush over Beth's win because they mistakenly focussed too much on one contestant. This is where the judges and show creators will value unbiased and balanced representation in future. It means you can give the winner, whoever it is, the celebration and glory they deserve.
