I know there's already a thread for female singer but which female ARTIST of the last 40 years is the most important/best/most influential?

For me, singer or not, it's Madonna!

Most important Whitney Houston, but i wouldn't say she was the best. I think the best would be tight between Madonna & Beyonce.....

Kate Bush maybe influenced Tori Amos and Florence - nice outcome.

Madonna maybe influenced Britney and Xtina - well, not so nice.

But she's possibly one of the most influential which I would say is more important.

For you and many others, but certainly not for me. Madonna, I can just about tolerate. Whitney and Beyonce, I utterly loathe.

As it's all down to personal opinion, it's impossible to say who's the best or the most important, so I'll just mention my favourite female artist of the last 40 years, and that is unquestionably Kate Bush. A true original.

My favourite of ALL TIME would be any of a fair number of great Jazz and R&B artists of the fifties, someone like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James or Dinah Washington.

I see this is the companion thread to the best female singer.

It's hard to think of anyone but Madonna because of her success and her clear artistic sensibilities which are seldom wrong. Madonna is not the complete innovator but she has lead on some areas like video and style and adapted to change on others, dance and electronic music.

My only doubt is whether she is as soulful as Mary J or Lauryn Hill. She is not as technically gifted as Whitney, Mariah or Janet Jackson. Indeed she may not be as stylish and artistic as Gaga but her influence is undoubted nonetheless.

I know she's not the MOST important or the MOST influential, but like said above I'd definitely say Mary J. Blige has had quite the impact in the R&B scene

She very much brought the whole term Hip-Hop / Soul to life with her album What's the 411. And i'd even go as far as saying she's probably been a big influence to some of the females in R&B and Hip-Hop at the moment. I'm sure I read somewhere that people like Beyonce, Keyshia Cole, Ashanti have been inspired by her

Genuinely do not understand this forums infatuation with Kate Bush, I could not name you one song of hers.

Anyway, I wouldn't say there is just one predominant artist. Madonna is certainly influential as a performer, but definitely not a singer. That honour goes to Whitney, Mariah at a stretch because Whitney wasn't really popular come mid-90s. You could probably even throw Britney and Beyonce in there somewhere.

For me it's Cyndi Lauper - love all her songs, albums, her style and she has had such an impatient on my musical tastes too!

Just because you may not know her music does not make her any less influential i've never listened to much by The Beatlesyet i know their influence maybe you should educate yourself Kate has done more for music than Whitney who just started the Melisma trend.

I second Mary. In her 20 year career she's never released a bad album.

I can't say the same for Mariah, Whitney, Madonna etc who have had quite a few duff albums between them.

Kate Bush is important in the pop world no doubt, to kiddies and uneducated music listeners who simply have no time to find out about her will not know this.

The most important female in musical history is clearly Cheryl Cole.

over the last 40 years...MADONNA! she has ruled for almost 31 already! and paved the way for so many...and inspired thousands of artists/performers/singers and sustained herself to this date...not to mention countless iconic moments, high profile pieces of music history too...and several iconic, prolific, masterpeice albums and singles too.....Like A Prayer, The First Album, Erotica, Like A Virgin, Ray Of Light, American Life, Confessions On A Dance Floor, True Blue, Im Breathless, Evita, Music......i mean look at the breadth of music/artistry and that chameleon like reflection...adaptation...Madonna by a landslide is the most important female artist/musician and also my favourite

Kate Bush is definitely second there....again she has been around slightly longer...has several iconic/prolific albums and eprformances/showcases and also influenced so many artists despite being very underrated compared to her contemporaries.....to me she is as important as Bowie and definitely almost as Madonna And also like M..she has sustained populatiry/interest to ensure commercial success/chart stability

Bjork, grace Jones, Debbie Harry (Blondie), Cyndi Lauper, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Britney Spears, Cher, Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, WHitney Houston, Mariah Carey, P!nk, ...love em or hate em have had different impacts of influence over the years and are by far big influences in music, culture etc....not on the same level as each other let alone the aforementioned trio....but definintely worth mentioning there too for sustainability, influence and impact....often all three too

you are kidding me??? Madonna has influenced SO many more than just that pair!

heck Florence has cited M as a massive influence herself....not to mention so many more female and male stars over the years too...lets not limit it by comparison!

Come on, Adele stated she liked the Spice Girls, is there a resemblance in ADELE's music? I think not. Florence maybe liked Madonna but heck I see no influence in her music by Madonna besides maybe Ray of Light

Point is no one should have to find out who she is. If she was this super influential pop icon you speak of, there would be no need to google her. I'm sure you could ask a 10 year old Bieber fan what she thinks of Whitney Houston and she'll probably start singing I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

I thought we speak about people who become artists and their influence and not about 10 year old Bieber fans
