'Scissor Sisters' best-selling album
Tuesday, January 4 2005, 22:36 GMT -- by Daniel Saney

Although it was thought that Keane's debut album Hopes And Fears was the highest-selling of the year, Scissor Sisters beat them on New Year's Eve.

Hopes And Fears smugly sat at the top of the album chart during November and December and was thought to be the greatest commercial success of the year, but then Scissor Sisters beat it by just 582 at the last minute.

Over the year the New York band sold 1,594,259 copies of their album featuring the hits Comfortably Numb, Laura and Mary.

"It's a fantastic result, but what is most special is that the two biggest-selling albums of the year are both from brand new UK-signed artists," said Lucian Grainge, the chairman Scissor Sisters' record label, Universal Music UK.

How do they deserve it? A second rate disco novelty act beat a depression by numbers band. Hardly a shining example of British musical taste is it?

I know I'm a minority, but I really don't understand the appeal of the Scissor Sisters. I've not really liked any of thir stuff that I've heard and I hate Filthy Gorgeous.

I love the Scissor Sisters. They truly deserve to be be the number one album of 2004 even though I am also a fan of Keane.

They are just a bit more out there!

Some sad New York band doing Disco pap on a UK record contract sells 1.6 million - thats really sad. Scissor Sisters Suck BIGTIME. 2nd album will probably flop hence it was ALL hype with these camp performers.

Also selling 1.6 million albums - KEANE more than deserved to keep the biggest selling album of 2004. 4 Brilliant singles, an amazing album, good honest geniune chaps who worked very hard on their debut album, who have great potential to continue being one of the UK's biggest rockbands PLUS they are English.

Pray tell, who would you have liked to have seen selling the most records last year?

In my opinion, the Scissor Sisters are a breath of fresh air in the mess that is called the 'pop charts'. Love them or hate them, noone can deny the impact they have made. They should be judged on their follow-up album.. then we will see whether they are a novelty act, or whether they have longevity.

The Sister Sisters have had 3 brilliant singles :'Laura', 'Mary' and 'take your mama'.

They are nice people who also worked really hard to make an impressive debut uk album and have toured years band so on to get a following.

Aslo there a breath of fresh air in the pop industry and are something different.

So what if there camp and that there not english, they make good music.

Breath of Fresh air? LOL RIIIGHT They are one of the least original bands around - 2 singles named after girls? and a cover of a Pink Floyd classic for the debut (which they brutually killed) ? I hear TAke Your Mama was also a cover. They've actually been making this type of music since the 70s! Disco pop...and its crap. Its all a fad with this band, like boy/girlbands - you'll soon go off them........PS a 5th single resorting to a NY club where all kinds of bizarre things happen in the video is very desperate...sickening.

originality is the key and both bands have it, however one is melancholy and the other is camp diso pop.

they both write their own songs, so i dont see the problem. scissor sisters do deserve it however, i thought the floyd cover was a bit strange at first but after take your mama they have definitley grown on me.

there is no camp disco to speak of in the charts, they are a genuine breath of fresh air, as are keane.

the fact that they have collaborated with kylie must show something (although bless her my darling, she has recieved a much needed boost with that i believe in you they wrote for her).

the scissors are camp, kitsch, ironic and above all original.

i dont know why the hatred though if you dont like the scissors dont listen to em?

The scissors are original??? You obviously weren't around in the 70's then? Kylie was boosted by the scissors? Er, when they have been around for 15 years, I might listen to that comment, but for now, they should count their blessings for the kudos they will get from working with an established artist.....not that I like her either.....

Certainly none of the dross that everybody has been fawning over this last year.

As for originality, was that some kind of joke? Keane are a coldplay ripoff (which is rich considering coldplay are hardly groundbreaking) and Scissor sisters are putting out what can only be described as unmitigated crap.

Again D Sizzle, we ask, what WOULD YOU have LIKED to have been the Biggest Selling Record of 2004? We totally get that you don't like the Scissor Sisters by now!

Me personally I love the Scissor Sisters, their album is just brilliant for music fans who like their cds to be entertaining, this is pure entertainment, camp disco, dance, pop, a bit of everything on there and deserving as the Sisters are not manufactured, have been working their arses off for years and finally got their break, plus they ARE original. Theres no group around at the moment like them. Whereas Keane dont' sound a million miles away from Coldplay, although in saying that Keane have some great songs aswell.

Both would have deserved the title of biggest selling album, but I'm glad it was the Scissor Sisters who on it, can't wait to see them live.

Probably A Semblance of Normality by Skyclad, or Reckoning Night by Sonata Arctica. Although Reckoning Night is nowhere near as good as their previous efforts, it's still much better than a lot of the stuff out there.

But alas, these are bands that don't make by the numbers stuff. So they will never be popular over here.

Oh well.

They Would get my vote Just going by the UK Chart run Below.

Totals: Wks=48, Pk=1, Re=0, Ri=0, Mi=No, Sa=(42,952/0)
Wks At Pk(1,2), Wks In Top 10 (30), Wks In Top 20 (42)
Chart Appearances Between: 14 Feb 04 - 08 Jan 05
New Entry: (14 Feb 04)-11-20-28-32-34-37-43-22-10-10-5-8-6-6-8-9-9-8-12-5-2-1-2-1-2-3-6-6-5-5-6-14-19-15-14-13-10-5-5-8-10-11-11-14-11-7-3-2-(48 Wks)

They Have only Had 6 weeks out of the top 20 but have always maintained a position in the top 40 except one week at 43 and have climbed back into the top 3 twice.

I can see another with stats that good for 2004.

Nicely summed up in one sentence . Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks the Scissor Sisters are piss poor.

'Stats' in the UK charts, are hardly a sign of how good the music actually is.

The Scissor Sisters are ok, but just that. They are a decent covers band with a quirk. Keane are doing what has been done a thousand times better before them, and D Sizzle is rights about his two choices, very good.

To be honest, there wasn't much good music last year, full stop.
