smoked peppered mackerel fillets: what to do with them
I got these in Asda the other day. I was gonna cook them for myself with rice, but I need to have some sort of gravy on it as I don't like it dry, so how could I cook the fillets (btw I know they can be eaten just like that) so that I get a sauce to go with the rice?
I can only think of having them with rice but I am open to other suggestions. |

I usually just eat them as they are as a snack or they go well with a bit of horseradish or with salad and new pots.
Can't really think of a sauce.. |

I've just had some for lunch/dinner...........I grilled them and had them with boiled new potatoes and broccoli
I put butter on my spuds and broccoli so that provided some juice........... |

You can eat them cold or warmed-up. If they are warmed-up then put a knob of butter on them or a squeeze of lemon juice. Or Sauce Tartare.

I usually have them cold with salad and lashings of horseradish sauce. Grilled can be nice too. I've always found them quite moist anyway so never bothered with a sauce.

Whizz them in the blender with some Philly, a squeeze of lime juice and a spoonful of horseradish to make paté. Eat on hot toast. Yummy.

I often have smoked/peppered mackerel with an asian stirfry or rice, I put some soya or tamari sauce in a bowl and then lay the fillets face down for 30 mins or so before warming them up, delicious!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have found a recipe for smoked peppered mackerel fishcakes and I am giving it a go today, will let you know how they turn out.

New potatoes, salad and a creme fraiche dip with grated beetroot & horseradish goes well apparently. I love the dip but I'm veggie - my hubby & daughter love the mackerel.
I do love the smoked smell tbh. |

I have just had the fishcakes, they were quite nice; might mix in more mustard or horseradish sauce next time.

Try putting a little peanut oil over the fish before zapping in the micro or oven reheating, makes a big difference. Have you tried Lidls smoked mackerel as they are pretty moist and precooked peppered and unpeppered

When I was asking about a sauce, I didn't mean a sauce for the fish but to go on the rice. As they are quite cheap, I might try having them on their own and will follow the suggestions here, thanks. |
