smoked peppered mackerel fillets: what to do with them
lem ramsay
12-03-2013
I got these in Asda the other day. I was gonna cook them for myself with rice, but I need to have some sort of gravy on it as I don't like it dry, so how could I cook the fillets (btw I know they can be eaten just like that) so that I get a sauce to go with the rice?
I can only think of having them with rice but I am open to other suggestions.

I usually just eat them as they are as a snack or they go well with a bit of horseradish or with salad and new pots.

Can't really think of a sauce..

I've just had some for lunch/dinner...........I grilled them and had them with boiled new potatoes and broccoli

I put butter on my spuds and broccoli so that provided some juice...........

You can eat them cold or warmed-up. If they are warmed-up then put a knob of butter on them or a squeeze of lemon juice. Or Sauce Tartare.

I usually have them cold with salad and lashings of horseradish sauce. Grilled can be nice too. I've always found them quite moist anyway so never bothered with a sauce.

Although I grilled them today i usually eat them cold if only because cooking them stinks the house out..............

I'l usually just have them cold but with cooked veg

I've never really considered any sauce to be necessary

Whizz them in the blender with some Philly, a squeeze of lime juice and a spoonful of horseradish to make paté. Eat on hot toast. Yummy.

I often have smoked/peppered mackerel with an asian stirfry or rice, I put some soya or tamari sauce in a bowl and then lay the fillets face down for 30 mins or so before warming them up, delicious!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have found a recipe for smoked peppered mackerel fishcakes and I am giving it a go today, will let you know how they turn out.

New potatoes, salad and a creme fraiche dip with grated beetroot & horseradish goes well apparently. I love the dip but I'm veggie - my hubby & daughter love the mackerel.
I do love the smoked smell tbh.

I have just had the fishcakes, they were quite nice; might mix in more mustard or horseradish sauce next time.

Try putting a little peanut oil over the fish before zapping in the micro or oven reheating, makes a big difference. Have you tried Lidls smoked mackerel as they are pretty moist and precooked peppered and unpeppered

I don't have Lidl here, I have been in the one in Woolwich in London but don't remember much about the stuff they had.

When I was asking about a sauce, I didn't mean a sauce for the fish but to go on the rice. As they are quite cheap, I might try having them on their own and will follow the suggestions here, thanks.
