I have a LG E960 Nexus 4 phone.

I bought my unlock code on ebay the other day and went to try and unlock my phone by going into the keypad and typing 2945#*960# and I've also tried 2945*#960# but when I click call it says "USSD Code Running..." then after about 2-3 seconds it says "Connection problem or invalid MMI code".

I've tried it with the Unaccepted SIM & the accepted SIM.

Any help would be grateful.

I didn't realise any Nexus 4s were locked, where did you buy it?

I had the phone with 02 and now I want to unlock it for Orange. When I try the Orange Sim and put the code in it says Mobile Network Unavailable and when I try the 02 one (the accepted one), it says USSD Code Running then fails with the MMI error.

The Nexus 4 is unlocked, even the one from O2. Just put the Orange SIM card in there and it will work.

Sounds like me purchasing the unlock code was pointless then!

Why do I get the problem when I put the Orange sim card in of No Mobile Network or something....

Ok I've just tried my girlfriends Orange SIM on my phone and that worked. Then I tried my SIM in another phone and that works also. It just wont work in the Nexus 4 for some reason.

All Nexus devices are unlocked. That's what they are about. Free from carrier modifications of any kind.

Did you get your Orange Micro SIM from Orange or did you have a standard Orange SIM that you cut down to size?

I've just figured out the problem.

I forgot to register the Micro SIM as my original sim was a standard size one.

So what scammers were selling Nexus 4 unlock codes?

That's what I'm thinking! Report it to eBay immediately mate telling them that all Nexus 4 phones are unlocked permanently and ask for a refund. PayPal or eBay will refund your money with the buyer protect scheme.

That certainly wasn't always the case - my Galaxy Nexus was originally locked to O2.

Google changed their strategy with that device and they were slammed for it. In the US the Galaxy Nexus had 3 variants and were all locked, and as you say it was sold SIM-locked by some carriers, though there was a fully unlocked version as I had one.

I don't think Google will repeat that mistake again because if the device is locked it defeats the purpose of a "pure Android" experience. I think Samsung had something to do with that situation tbh.

Problem is, if they let the OEM partner sell the handset to networks and retailers as LG have with the Nexus 4, it may not be within their control to ensure they're all unlocked.

For Google to have complete control, they need to do what they did with the Nexus 10 and draft a contract with the OEM that sees every unit go to Google/prevent the OEM from selling it on themselves.

I have a feeling that Google collaborated with LG on the premise that they would not sim lock the device. Samsung is very carrier friendly and I don't think Google liked the way the Galaxy Nexus was handled. I haven't heard of any Nexus 4s being sim unlocked, so I think they've tried to prevent something like that happening, particularly in the US.

I seriously doubt Walmart and Staples, etc. are buying their stock from Google. Considering Google don't have a supply chain of their own it will almost certainly be coming from Samsung's supply chain.

Not really sure what that would have to do with Samsung though - the decision to make CDMA Galaxy Nexuses would've been Google's, not Samsung's.
And the almighty cluster-lovin' that was the firmware updates will have had nothing to do with Samsung either as they're Nexus devices.
