Great Voices, Very Talented & Drop Dead Gorgeous!

So why aren't they Worldwide Solo Music Superstars?

Yet people like Britney "Lip-Sync" Spears, Beyonce "Overrated" Knowles, Niki Minaj, who couldn't sing if her life depended on it, Katy "Out of Tune" Perry and Taylor Swift have all the success!

Emma has zero charisma.
Geri is just plain annoying.
Mel C is looks like a horse.

None of them have great voices, unless your comparing than to Victoria.

I mean... I've loved Geri since I was a teenager and I've bought every single thing she's ever released even if it has been crap but we can't really compare her with Beyonce can we (and I don't like Beyonce)

Emma and Mel C are void of any personality, both have decent enough voices but no "sparkle"

Geri was very much the Lady Gaga of her day in the sense the wacky style carried her. She had a successful start to her solo career as well. Not just in the UK but around Europe. It all started to go pair shape for Geri late 2001. I think after having her biggest hit with 'Its Raining Men' her bubble just burst. I think what really happened though is that the Spice Girl fanbase just became adults at that point and moved on with their lives.

Mel C has always been the most talented but has never been able to connect with the public on her own.

Emma has had some nice songs. I think her Free Me album is the best solo Spice record.

Geri was the Lady GaGa of her day?????

What!!!!! Quite possibly the most stupid statement ever.
I'm no GaGa fan in the slightest but come on, have a word with yourself.

Did you read what I said??

''Geri was the Lady Gaga of the day in the sense her wacky style carried her''

Which is true. Gaga's style carries her. Strip that away and what are you left with? it was the same with Geri. Yes Gaga can sing but she had to create a persona because without that she wasn't getting anywhere. It was exactly the same with Geri. While she didn't have the voice it was her image which made her the success. Without her OTTness Geri would have been a nobody. The Union Jack dress, the wild outfits, coming out at the Brits between a pair of open legs.. being the voice for a generation of young girls... That is what made Geri who she was. Gaga is very similar to her in more ways than one.

So not so stupid if you actually read what I wrote.

Infact I'm pretty sure Gaga even listed Geri as one of her influences....

The "style" of Geri and GaGa is poles apart - to sugest otherwise is ridiculous.

Geri is a loud-mouth, gauche show off who masterminded her exit from the Spice Girls to hopefully become the massive solo star. She has no talent other than having the gift of the gab and a big pair of tits. All that thing of kissing Prince Charles - makes my skin crawl. And giving her child the name Madonna - how desperate can you be? Always feeding off someone else's ideas and talent.

GaGa gains attention herself, that is not in question, but she has more natural talent and ability in music and style than Geri could ever dream of having.

Yes, Lady GaGa was inspired by Geri......or at least that's what Geri says lol

Oh deary me. It seems your very anti Geri so have blinkered glasses on. You have made it clear from this post she disgusts you but that is no reason to downplay what she achieved. The Spice Girls success wasn't only down to Simon Fuller. It was down to Geri's drive, her attitude to female empowerment and her ability to connect with millions of young girls worldwide. The Spice Girls folded when she left. A certain Adele cites Geri Halliwell as her idol. That's Geri's legacy.

So downplay her all you want. Her blueprint is still evident 16 years later.

Also Gaga discusses Geri here.

Also you can say Gaga has natural talent. To a degree I would agree. But her natural persona got her no where. No label would touch her until clever execs changed her image and marketed her as Gaga rather than Stefani. Some would say what Geri did was more natural. She lacked vocal skills but she made up for it with everything else.

Yes I am anti Geri - she is a fowl individual who selfishly looked after herself once she'd "driven" the Spice Girls to success. Doesn't matter how many singers cite her as an influence (I think you've mentioned 2) she is a vapid, talentless and rather ironically Wannabe.
Her only 'talent' is self-promotion.

Lmao yeah because Gaga's certainly not a wannabe wearing meat dresses and living inside eggs lololol

I get what you're saying about Geri but if you took her name out of the post above you could very well describe Gaga.

Anyway, back to the original point - I liked Emmas Free Me era. Mel C did ok for herself as did Geri, I just think that particularly in Geris case she took a large gap between album two and three and then when she did bounce back her appeal had sort of waned.

Melanie C - Northern Star, I Turn To You

Emma - I'll Be There, Maybe, What Took You So Long

Geri - Ride It, It's Raining Men (guilty pleasures :S)

I think Emma was the more accomplished solo Spice Girl, with Mel C just behind

I remember how i was expecting SO much more of Mel B, but i can't really remember any of her solo hits, only I Want You Back, obviously.

Until recently Geri had definitely sold more and was more accomplished.

The above argument is the one thing I admire the most about Geri, she's acknowledged the fact she's not the best singer/dance or best looking woman in the world but she's worked hard and got to where she wanted to be. I think that counts for a lot.

Emma Bunton has that "girl next door" thing. I don't think she has zero charisma, she has a nice bubbly personality. But even if she does have no charisma, that doesn't stop people like Taylor Swift having success.

Geri is just plain annoying.
That's true. She's kind of insane. But she does have star quality. She'd be a great chatshow host or something.

Mel C is looks like a horse.

What kind of horses have you been looking at?

Mel C's Debut album was just superb - I still listen to it and sounds just as great. I really couldnt get into her other stuff until The Sea came out in 2011 - brilliant.

The comment about her looks is very shallow - just shows how fickle some people are.

Emma - Her second album was great too - Free Me, Maybe, I'll Be there - all cracking singles. The style really suited her.

Geri's debut again was excellent - one number 2 hit and three number singles - That was definitely her time. Geri still holds the title for most number ones for a female artist - Mi Chico Latino, Lift Me Up, Bag it Up and It's Raining Men. 8 consecutive top 10 hits isnt something most British female singers can claim.

I do like Beyonce, Gaga, Perry & Britney but lets face it - they have or soon developed overtly sexualised images - we've all seen gaga wearing next to nothing in photo shoots, if you have ever been to a concert by Beyonce, Britney, Perry etc you will know just how sexy they behave and ultimately - Sex sells - by the bucket load. They are seen as glamorous and what young girls aspire to be and who men lust after - Mel C and Emma have always been just girls next door which as time goes on doesnt 'sell' - Yes Geri tried to be sexy but nothing to the degree of their American counterparts..

I think people underestimate how big Geri Halliwell was on her own in 1999 & 2000.

She was HUGE. Her first solo album was more Spicey and successful than the Spice Girls third one they did without her.

Her first and second albums are really good - Schizophonic had a lot of good pop tunes on it. I also bought the third album Desire but I have to say I only listened to Riding It, Desire and Love Never Loved Me

I loved "Schizophonic". I remember getting my mum to go buy me the cassette when I was at school and rushing home to hear it. I listened to it on repeat for days afterwards. Still listen to it now sometimes, each song takes you to a completely different place to the previous.

Also loved the 2 album covers concept (red cover and white cover) and how 5 songs were the extrovert in her whilst the other 5 were more deep and emptional.

Yes you are right - I forgot about the two covers you could choose - I went for the white one! This thread got me to play my Geri cds again - I'm on Schizophonic - It's still great after all these years! I like her 'red' songs!

I remember she was nominated for a Brit too - she was robbed!

Mel C has has a relatively successful career. 10,000,000+ worldwide sales from a short haired chick from a cheesy pop girl group is not bad going.

Geri had successful singles (Geri more so) but has never quite conquered the album market the way Northern Star did for Mel C.

Emma pretty much had top 5 singles that sold well but her albums did nothing internationally or here for that matter.

Mel B & Victoria are not even worth mentioning but I think Mel C is easily the only one that has created herself an identity away from the Spice Girls.
