Just watching BBC new and they are saying world wide over 80% of Andriod devices in use right now cost less than $150. That's quite shocking.

The average Apple device costs over $450 and the average windows phone in use right now cost over $350, so it seems android really is the primark of mobile tech.

How is it shocking?

Even a moron can see this is showing you you are getting ripped right off from apple since those 80% are still better than the iPhone!

Apple only produce a couple of phones at fixed prices, Android is open platform and can go on many devices, so its not exactly shocking news now is it.

Any idea who the BBC source of that information is? What type of average is being applied?

Which bit is the BBC quote and which is your added information?

I can only speak for myself but I would very probably get my money back on what I paid for my Huawei G300

PS yet more proof that the mobile 'war' will develop on the exact same lines as the Mac v PC 'war'...with the same result.

Costs to make is about that.... minus marketing, staff costs, R&D, parts shipping, tooling up, retail stores, iCloud upkeep etc etc.

Why am I responding?

So Android (a mobile OS not a make of phones) is “Primark”. So what does that make Apple (a Make of phones not a mobile OS). So who on the high street, apart from Apple, sell items available elsewhere at normal prices, let’s say smartphones for $150 for instance, hmmm. Yes Apple are the BrightHouse of the mobile world. You pay more and get less. I’m off to Primark for some socks – well socks are mobile.

Every forum needs a "Hugh" just for comedy value....

I prefer to think of it the other way round - apple as being the Burberry of the tech world. Overpriced for what you are getting and more than a little chavvy

..... Perspective is a wonderful thing.......

I wouldn't use any of those devices. They all seem dodgy. You think you're getting a great deal but in reality the phone/tablet is absolute junk. Better to spend a bit extra and buy one from a reputable brand such as Samsung or HTC. BTW my Ace 2 only cost me £129. I got a great deal on it

My Ace 2 was about £150 when I bought it last October and is due a JB update soon. So I'm getting my moneys worth from it. I refuse to now upgrade to anything else as the Ace 2 does all I need and is the perfect size for me.

Price has no reflection on quality. Sometimes when you pay more you get more, sometimes you don't. I don't really see what the point is, as some Android phones cost quite a lot, as much as an iPhone, and others are very cheap. The key is though that Android covers a wide spectrum and allows its users a choice in what kind of device they use and what they want to get out of it. That is the key to its success.

That's not such a bad thing. Not everyone is going to want or be able to afford a £500 phone.

It could well be true. However I agree cheap doesn't always mean crap. Before I got my Samsung galaxy note, I bought a galaxy y for about £100 and used it for 2 months after my iPhone was stolen. I didn't think it would be very good, but surprisingly it was really good. Once you took out things like build quality and screen quality, in terms of function I'd say it could do about 80 percent of the things that top end phones can do.

I disagree that Android is the Primark of phones. First of all Android is a fantastic mobile operating system. It is software. Android is not hardware. It's open source and can be loaded onto any device a manufacturer wants it to be on. It's not Android's fault if it gets loaded onto a garbage hardware phone. iOS would also be awful if it was somehow flashed onto a £50 device. Fed up of this ignorance.

$150 is a lot.

I very much doubt there is any smart-phone out there that costs more than that to manufacturer.

Being relatively new to Android (How I miss Windows mobile pocket PCs) I can't really say much apart from the fact they do a good entry level one like the Alcatel TT-903 Onetouch (I coldn't get the one I wanted).

Why bump a thread from March to reply to a poster, surely if it wasn't worth doing at the time then it isn't now
