I've given this a lot of thought over the past few years and I thought it was time to have a discussion to see what the best options are for stopping puppy farming.

Do we have licensed breeders only, with permits and are subject to regular checks? Or is that too much?

I want to try and create a movement to really see if we can't make a difference in the Government, because something needs to be done.

Would this work or would it make puppy farms/backyard breeders go even deeper undercover. Something needs to be done. I truly dont believe people are educated enough - I have asked a number of my friends their thoughts and they are not even aware of puppy farms

Limits on number of dogs or puppies a person can produce in a 5 year period would be good, limited to one litter a year. That would stop puppy farmers instantly they couldn't make enough money out of it to continue.

stop the image and designer attitude people have towards buying pedigrees. push the mutt, if there is no money in pedigrees then the puppy farms would stop. Don't forget puppy farms are not the only issue. legititmate breeders are not always 'good' and then you have the ones that breed their family pet because 'its best to let her have one season' (crap) and then we get another influx of puppies at the pound.

Personally I think you should have to pay if you want to breed, and if you buy a puppy you should ask to see the registration.

I certainly think it should be illegal to breed the same dog more than X times (as determined by people with more experience than I)?

So... thanks for your comments. Does this mean there should be an investigative body to keep these things under control? They could ensure there were tighter tabs on sales on Gumtree, etc (which should be made illegal).

Licensed breeders with tighter scrutiny would mean more control and better standards.

Of course, until there's more education, people are always going to buy from back street breeders to save a few quid. But there are far too many people allowed to breed with impunity and something urgently needs to be done about it.

What kind of monster hates dogs so much they want to stop puppies being bred? Why not think a minute about the millions of puppies that will never be born if you have your Nazi way of it. Wow. Just wow.

What kind of monster wants to see puppies born to worn out mothers in dingy dirty pens, puppies with no health checks on the parents so often disabled in body and mind ?

What exactly is puppy farming? Is it where people make a living solely from breeding and selling?

While yours is obviously the obligatory troll post... Would I like to see millions (AKA thousands) fewer puppies born? Of course.

Only a complete fool can't see the horrendous conditions in which puppies are being bred, and the awful health conditions which these poor creatures are being subjected to.


It's where bitches are being bred endlessly often in completely awful conditions, only to be dumped on rescues once they have served their purpose.

Oh Dear God

I know I say it a lot, but I do think it should be made easier for new owners to adopt dogs in a responsible way.

Discourage breeders from charging huge amounts for pups.

Encourage rescues to be more open minded about who they adopt their dogs out to.

People will take the path of least resistance, it's in their nature, and it's much easier to go to a nearby, cheap BYB/pet shop/farm and pick out a pup no questions asked as opposed to travelling all over the country, looking for a breeder or rescue willing to rehome to you then having to jump through hoops for the following months.
