It was broadcast over a long period (12 or 24 hours). Presented by an old guy with grey hair.

I think it was a show from the 1990's sort of like Comic Releif.

ITV seem intent with the God awful Text Santa as their annual charity appeal these days.

I remember the ITV Telethon being about in 1988 because I was expecting my eldest son then, and whenever the music came on with the advert for it he would start kicking around inside me like an over-eager contestant in a disco dance competition.

It also sticks in my mind because some guy I knew at the time decided to indulge in a bit of trout poaching on the bank of a river miles from nowhere, in the stupidly small hours of the morning. He was already well-settled and was congratulating himself on having found somewhere quiet when it all started to go a bit pear-shaped for him. If Telethon archives still exist then somewhere within there is footage of dozens of Telethon runners bounding along a riverside path at dawn, with one very large trout poacher in the background unsuccessfully trying to look invisible
