I recently started saving up to buy the LG Nexus 4 on a SIM-free basis and use it with my existing Giffgaff SIM card. But with the recent reveal of the S4 I'm wondering whether I should go for that instead. I would probably be getting it on Virgin Media as I'm already a customer with them and I could therefore get a discounted deal.

The N4 would be the cheaper option in the long run but having lost my Desire S last year I'm still quite wary about owning such a high cost device without insurance (I have savings, but I would rather not touch them unless it was really necessary). VM offer free insurance for existing customers which covers loss and theft but the overall cost of the contract is still over 200 more if the current S3 tariffs are anything to go by. OTOH my bank offers mobile phone insurance but obviously at a cost and I don't know how good it is. I wouldn't go near Protect Your Bubble with a bargebole.

Features wise I'm quite impressed by the S4's Smart Pause and Air Gesture but these are really features that I could live without. Likewise with the sphere camera on the N4.

I would mainly be using the phone for apps, gaming, photos, music and internet browsing as well as the basic functions of calling and texting. The N4 seems to do all of those things well but how does/will it compare to the S4?

I'm weighing up the pros and cons of both options in my head but I'm really torn between the two and I could do with some second opinions. So, which would you go for?

Go for the Nexus 4 if you value updates more, but from a hardware standpoint the S4 is obviously now more superior. Personally I think the Nexus is insane value for the price, whereas the S4 is likely to cost a lot more.

Plus the Nexus 4 will get the next version(s) of Android as soon as they are released, whereas you will be waiting if you go with the S4. It's a tricky decision, but it just boils down to which device you would prefer to have. Both devices are great though. If you are prone to losing/breaking things, I would be weary about buying the S4 (especially sim-free) as it is a newer device and will most likely be more expensive to repair. But the Nexus 4 is also quite fragile, however I think the lower price offsets this.

Yeah, updates are pretty important. I don't want a device that's going to become obsolete in 12 months time, but then there's always custom ROMS.

"Luckily" the Desire S is the only phone I have ever lost but I am nevertheless prone to losing things in general.

Much nicer design, cheaper and pure Android.

It simply a matter of cost as there is no other comparison between the two phones. The s4 is clearly the better phone the only issue that should seat you is cost.

If money was not a problem the s4 is a clear winner but for the money hard to argue against the Nexus.

No phone becomes obsolete in twelve months let alone the s4

You do realise the Nexus 4 is only 279 don't you? So no need to "save up"

Also if you are someone who needs a lot of storage, then N4 is limited with no SD support. So if thats important to you, then I guess the S4, but if you dont mind having 8 or 16gb storage, then N4 is a great choice. I own it and have never looked back. Fantastic phone, and very very nippy.

As a general rule I ignore anything you post as the remarks of a sad lonely guy but very occasionally I'm really irritated by your condescending and offensive attitude.

You have no idea about a posters circumstances so who are you to tell someone they don't need to save, if you wish to make you usual moronic comments fine but making sweeping judgements such a this I find completely uncalled for.

Yes, that was a patronising remark for him to make wasn't it? No offence taken though, I'll pretend he's not here.

Both are good phones with great specs. The S4 is the latest and greatest from Samsung but the nexus is one of the best phones on the market now anyway. Some people like the simplicity of google devices compared to those from other manufacturers which will have their own skins on top of the OS. I know a lot of people moan about touch wiz but I like it. I suppose you could read up on the reviews and then go and see both in the flesh to see which one you like best.

What a disgusting comment to make. You should be ashamed of yourself tbh.

Either will do nicely. It's the need to be on the biggest bandwagon that complicates things.

I forgot to mention I have the Nexus 7, which is another reason I'm considering the N4. Are they cross-compatible in any way?

I've noticed Hugh's posts before, winding people up seems to be a hobby of his.

I have an S3, but really want an S4! Lack of SD card storage is the main reason why I wouldn't get a Nexus but your views may differ. The S4 will ship with Android 4.2.2, Samsung have been pretty efficient with updates, especially on unlocked/SIM-free models, I've had 6 Android updates in as many months (ICS 4.0.4-JB 4.1.1-JB 4.1.2)

I think 16GB will cut the mustard, a card slot would be nice but I'm sure I could cope without.

If that remark offended you I do apologies, but I would also suggest you need to toughen up a bit. But I simply thought you may been under the impression the Nexus 4 was in the 500 mark.

Also the 8Gb version is 238.

I wasn't offended, just a bit taken aback that a complete stranger on an internet forum could think they were in a position to tell me about my financial situation. If you weren't on a wind up then I take my last but one comment back but it was a silly thing for you to say.

It's cool, I've accepted your apology and I'm going to leave it at that. No harm done.

Well I've given it some thought and I'm going to go for the Nexus 4. The only downside really is that by buying SIM-free I don't get insurance included but I could just put some money aside for that should the worst come to worst.

Just one simple question, perhaps a slightly daft one, but can I run games like Vice City on the N4?
