Utter tripe in my opinion.

Two outstanding actors very much out of their comfort zone and what they are used to!

I'd have said it was four outstanding actors. And, while they may not be the sort of roles they're used to, they're very comfortable in them.

The less said about the young trainee, the better.

Now see, I thought that was terrible. The preceding line (something about there "only being one body part anyone needs to see" should have been her gag. What on earth was the point in explaining it, unless we're just supposed to collapse into hysterics on hearing an old lady say "penis"? It's either that or they genuinely thought audiences would be too dim to get the double entendre, so they had to make it explicit.
I agree it wasn't needed and almost ruined the joke. It didn't seem to get as big a laugh as the first line if I remember correctly.

Some things are better unsaid or unseen, like the dog and the mother, both of whom turned out to be disappointingly normal and nothing like the image they'd built up when finally seen. It's exactly why they should have been left to the imagination, as the perpetually eating, obese boyfriend was.

I already said what I thought about that joke but I completely agree about the Mother and the Dog.

The same was true about Penelope and Stuart having slept together: the 'punchline' is when Penelope confirms that Stuart has slept with a woman - it's obvious as soon as she says this that she's the woman in question. The moment is lost when she then tells them all it was her - the audience isn't stupid, we don't need stuff spelt out to us.

I agree. The comedy was already there and them pointing it out further seemed wither to be dumbing down or being more vulgar for the sake of it.

I didn't think the special was that good. I though Penelope had the best lines.

I still think that either the actor playing Ash cannot act or that he is a very good actor who for some reason has been told to act as though he's in an AmDram production.

Just caught up with the ep, thought it was good.
Iwan doesn't suit this role, he suits dark, mysterious roles this is way too light-hearted for him imo he is a great actor but in this role he is not good.

If he was great, he'd suit anything!

On the other hand the cod northerner serves as a foil. With such seasoned hams you need a bit of contrast

caught the repeat tonight and the show has got no funnier unfortunately. I want to like it and the acting talent is formidable but without a funny script it's all for nothing. Not only is not funny there's a rather nasty undercurrent to it. I know it's called 'Vicious' but this must be the first sitcom that has cruelty and bitching at its heart. If the gags were killer lines like in 'Will and Grace' or 'Ab Fab' it would help but without the funnies all you're left with is this rather unpleasant atmosphere around the show.

I don't think people here are saying you don't need some contrast, they're saying the actor concerned is not up to the job, and the Ash character appears to have been shoe-horned into proceedings with very little consideration as to why he's there. Why doesn't he have any friends of his own and why would a straight young man want to constantly hang around 2 old queens? The other acting talent is indeed formidable, as vauxhall1964 says, but the writing certainly isn't.

The final episode airs tonight. ITV at 9pm. I believe it has aired in the US already.

Yeah.Nice finish to a decent show. They were obviously very fond of each other.

Doubt it will go down as a comedy classic but some decent bitchy laughs in there.
