I'd just rather Film 4 returned to 720x576 and a decent bitrate instead of all this +1 crap.

No other info is available at this time. But it's not happening until "the summer" (Channel 4's words) so plenty of time for things to happen

Freeview is basically BBC/ITV/CH4/CH5

....and shopping channels.

What happened to this brave new world of digital terrestrial we were all promised?

You missed UKTV, plus the three Sky channels (News, Pick & Challenge) Al Jazeera, RT, Quest

This isn't good news, I am usually a fan of +1 channels and like the purpose they serve, but I only think they have a place on Satellite/Sky/Virgin where the channel capacity isn't particularly limited, if a +1 channel is broadcasting on Freeview it means that space could have been used for a channel which would offer a genuine extra choice. What could Channel 4 do instead? They have never offered a dedicated factual/documentary channel before, but we know they have at least the physical broadcast space to do it, with History/Discovery being rather sensational we only really have BBC FOUR for that sort of content and its not even a dedicated channel, Freeview only has Yesterday and Quest which are more entertainment based as well.

It might just about be worth having ITV+1 and Channel 4+1 on Freeview, but really we could have extra channels instead for every other one.

I honestly didn't notice it had disappeared.

Does anyone else think a +1 channel is a bit pointless when what you are trying to record is ~2.5 hours?

And repeated in 2 weeks?

Given the timescales, I'd hazard a guess that it's replacing one of the Sky Sports channels.

There's still enough space around to pack another sardine into most of the COM muxes.

Sky has an obligation to provide 3 channels and UKTV is mainly owned by the BBC anyway. Still more than just 4/5 before so

UKTV is owed 50:50 by BBC Worldwide and Scripps
Virgin Media has sold its 50% stake in pay-TV operator UKTV to US TV company Scripps Networks in a deal worth £339m.

Scripps – which owns US TV brands including The Cooking Channel and The DIY Network – has paid £239m in cash, and will pay out about £100m to acquire the outstanding preferred stock and debt owed by UKTV to Virgin Media.

Virgin Media had valued it stake in UKTV, the pay-TV business formed in 1997 as a 50-50 joint venture with BBC Worldwide, at about £350m including outstanding loans of more than £100m.

Ha! That's a joke, isn't it?

That's exactly what some of us were hoping - and had some reason to expect - that More 4 would be like, being something roughly equivalent to BBC4. Instead of which it has mainly shown endless repeats of Channel 4's portfolio of cheap lifestyle programming.

Indeed it was even supposedly relaunched a couple of years ago with the intention of concentrating on this type of output (which it was doing already anyway) but I haven't actually detected any change in its emphasis since and there has still been the odd programme here and there which is more the sort of thing such a channel might have been expected to provide. In fact, there are actually just a few hints that maybe they are moving a bit more in this direction with a number of interesting programmes starting to apear in the schedules, but it's too early yet to see if this is a permanent shift. We live in hope, but at the moment More 4 is hardly what they led us to believe it was going to be.

Well Scripps gave the BBC the option to have up to 60%. If they took it up or not who knows

Totally agree, Channel 4 were once behind (and occasionally if we're optimistic still are) some outstanding television, one strong area of this was in the factual department with programmes such as Cutting Edge & Equinox when they were at their finest. Channel 4 is supposed to be the channel that questions things, deepens our knowledge and to be alternative and irreverent, More4 seemed like it could be the channel to allow them more creative freedom without the constraints of the main channel, now though it is more conforming to a simple populist taste than the main channel.

With other documentary channels being pretty weak, if only Channel 4 could choose to establish itself in that area.

I don't know why people complain, were doing alright this year considering we'll never get the big channel without having to pay for them.

So far, this year.....

Film 4 + 1
uktv channel (possibly a best of)
Movie mix
Information tv, maybe
Whatever replaces argos

Plus, their pulling other pay sports channel off the platform, creating space for more possible channels

This might be a pretty good year.......

The trouble is they're all very low resolution and bitrate channels which doesn't make them very appealing to watch.

I agree with a low bit rate it can make watching Film4 and about seven other channels a pain in the bum. They would do far better to boost the bit rate and resolution rather than have another service launch.

Also as noted above +1 for films won't always be very helpful if it is a very long film.

Let say a movie starts at nine on film 4.That you been looking forward to seeing. But you want to watch The mentalist on channel 5 which is also on at nine. With the help of film 4+1 you can watch both.

The mentalist channel 5 @9pm.
The movie film 4+1 @10pm.

Or you can simply record the movie on Film 4 (or The Mentalist on Channel 5)
