So there is a caption on Film 4 on 791? I gues its to tell people they need to retune or loose the channel soon.”

It says "Film Four is moving. If you can see this on channel 15, please retune your Freeview equipment, to ensure you continue to receive this channel" - it's actually embedded into the video as I saw it on my media centre.

Ah I see thanks for the image! Intersting its part of the video!

Yes, Paddy C, it's good news for viewers who live in the Freeview-lite areas as they will now get at least one dedicated film channel.

I agree with this. It's quite handy to have Film4+1 now because you will be able to, for example, watch a 9pm documentary on Yesterday and then switch over at 10pm to watch the film on Film4+1.

So I retuned...but it made no difference. Film 4 is still on Channel 15

Got:

Film 4 - Channel 15

Film 4+1 - "Coming Soon"

Film 4 (627) - Showing the retune message

Film4 should still be on channel 15, you'll just get the new version (without the notice) rather than the old version (with the notice, and which will be replaced by Film4 +1 in 4 weeks' time).

The message suggests that Film 4 is leaving Channel 15. Others have been confused and have queried the message on twitter.

Not really, it advises that you should retune if you see the message on channel 15. If you are seeing it on some other channel number then obviously you aren't seeing it on 15 and don't need to retune.

Ok....I get it. Like if I told my neighbours that "I was moving" and they said "where are you moving to" and I said "I'm staying put"...

It quite clearly means retune if you can see the message on channel 15. Although I would agree that some people are very easily confused.

It might be what it means but it's not what it says.

I took it to mean if you can see Film4 on Channel 15.

And if experienced DS forumers are confused, what chance has the average viewer?

Why transmit a duplicate programme stream? Why not just a still frame caption with "Film4 has moved, please retune your box"?

Why not show Film 4+1 now and have a message between breaks on both channels telling people to retune to get the correct channels on the correct EPG numbers? Why wait 4 weeks?

One would assume that the average viewer reading the message would realise that it actually referred to the message. It could certainly have been more specific and highlighted that it actually meant the message in bold, red, capital letters.

Your suggestion could also have led to confusion, "the average viewer" continuing to see the still frame in the new slot after retuning and assuming they still had to retune.

They probably thought this method would be less confusing to "the average viewer" although from comments on this thread.. it apparently didn't work as planned.

What pisses me off most is it's yet ANOTHER freeview retune. Lost count of how many we've had since the analogue switch-off 16 months ago.

Can't wait to get my last tv switched over to Freesat so I can be rid of all this nonsense; well until Quest and Yesterday channels finally require a retune, as that's all I need from freeview now.

My box is set to rescan every morning so all these 'retune' messages make no sense to me?

The newer Freeview boxes and TVs handle changes like this without a need to retune.

It's something that should have been implemented from the start tbh.

My Humax Fox T2 isn't exactly old but doesn't auto retune, so every time you do it manually you then have to go through and reset your favourites, re-schedule all your recordings and delete all the crap channels you got rid of last time you retuned.

My Sony works flawlessly but Sky Sports 1 reappeared on one of my other TVs following the Film4+1 update.

I would prefer they had an option to not bother. Most of the changes are inconsequential to my viewing habits.

I think you can turn the Add Channels off on a Samsung.

Your Humax Fox T2 should auto retune though!

Do you put it in standby when you aren't using it, or do you leave it on all the time?

I'd get in touch with Humax, because all Freeview HD products must be capable of auto retuning in order to gain approval to use the Freeview HD logo.

It goes into standby overnight. All I've ever had is a nag screen asking me to retune.

The on Digital boxes were rather unspecified when compared with the Sky ones - IME the on digital Pioneer I had was little further on than the Amstrad SRX 100 (original Sky box) we had a decade and a bit earlier (aside from the very slow interactive services) - the Sky box was much more polished (e.g. it had an EPG, automatically updated the channel list, had responsive interactive services). Alas none of the Freeview boxes I've had have been as graceful as the Sky ones for retunes (usually losing favourites and/or timers when retuning)

I'm with ntscuser on this. The onscreen message is very confusing. It suggests that Film4 is not going to be on Channel 15 any longer so retune. The assumption being that one will then find Film4 on, say, Channel 67. But when it still appears on Channel 15 I thought that the retune had gone wrong. On four bloody boxes I was pretty narked.

A better wording could have been

Quote:
“Film 4+1 is coming to Channel 45. To get this new service and also keep Film 4 here on Channel 15 you need to retune.”

Any better suggestions?
