Film4 + 1 to return to Freeview

Picture quality is to a degree subjective. Having been brought up on 405 lines, then 625 line analogue when the early digital stuff appeared, it was even better. Maybe your screen is too large, or you are simply viewing too close to it, both will affect your perception of quality.
Of course, we should all buy smaller TVs so we can enjoy SDN/Arq A/Arq B content! Why didn't I think of that before?

Neither of those. It's simply that 544x576 is an abysmal resolution for widescreen content that should be banned from use.

I find 704 or 720x576 an acceptable SD viewing resolution in most cases.

You don't need time to count the dots when it's plainly apparent in seconds that far too much detail is lost from the picture.
