Haven't seen a thread on this, which is surprising, but oh well...

Fifty years ago today, on 22 March 1963, the début album from what would become the greatest, biggest-selling, most famous, most critically-praised and most influential band of all time was released. And what an album it is. Obviously it isn't as good as the later ones such as Revolver, Sgt Pepper or Abbey Road (my favourite), but there are some great songs on it including 'I Saw Her Standing There' and 'Twist and Shout'. Long live the Beatles.

I like the innocence and freshness to it, and you really get a sense of the energy and enthusiasm they had to record it all in one day.

My favourite song is There's A Place, the lyrics have a certain maturity and are the first sign of what's to come later - talking about being inside your own mind ect.

It's the 50th anniversary of the release of the first album by the most iconic popular music act of all time, and yet on this music (I use the word advisedly) forum the great mass of music (I use the word advisedly) fans seem more concerned about a crap girl group breaking up.

Alas!

I love this album, and I love Please Please Me as a song - it is up there with my favourite Beatles songs, along with Twist & Shout, There's A Place and Chains (and more!)

Love the above mentioned, love I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, and Anna (Go To Him).

Brilliant album.

A very solid 5/5 album, not one of there best but that's only because A Hard Day's Night and Rubber Soul onwards were so spectacular.

Recorded in a day, and at the time it seemed such a leap forward to anything that had gone before.

Some great tracks on it, yet it was just a small taster of what was to follow.

The progress they made musically in such a short time was incredible.

Please, Please Me was a decent debut, but they hadn't quite found their sound .John Lennon's voice wasn't quite there yet It didn't have as much impact on me as the follow-up With The Beatles, which despite them still doing a lot of covers had a more developed feel to it and had a much stronger impact, particularly their version of Money with Lennon in full flow belting out the verses still sounds great.

I agree. With The Beatles was the first album that really hit the spot.

I'm not a fan of the album personally, but there's no doubting it's importance. It's crazy to think what they went to achieve in the next 7 years, truly phenomenal. So happy birthday Please Please Me!

He did have a bad cold, or even flu.
Which shows how determined they were to prove themselves, especially to convince the record label to let them release their own material.
