Who are these "lots of people"?

I don't think I've ever seen a bad review for Last Crusade, usually considered to be the best after Raiders. Although Temple of Doom has gained more respect over the years I think Crusade is considered the better one of the sequels.

And as for making Crystal Skull because this "did poor" - why did it take them 20 years to decide?

It's my favourite film of the series. I think it flows along a lot better than Raiders, and actually improves on it. I don't like Temple much, and it's the only one of the four I wouldn't re-watch now. Quite like Skull, and don't understand the hate it gets.

Agreed, it isn't as bad as everyone says it is, but it's not exactly amazing either.

I think the main issue is with the "nuclear explosion fridge scene" being too ridiculous, but the rest of the film is hardly realistic...

You'd choose Skull over Temple?

Wow! I thought Skull was awful - and yes I know it's easy to say that because of the hate it got since but I remember seeing it on opening and part of me died inside. It was just embarrassing, I can't bring myself to watch it again....EVER!!!!!

It's very nearly as good as Raiders IMO , without question the best of the 3 sequels.

Connery is a fantastic addition and the supporting cast are great, the pre credit young Indy scene adds to the overall series and the story is fab.

The only downside watching it these days are some of the special effects which look decidedly ropey (the German officer shaking his fist at the departing airship, the ageing having drunk from the supposed grail).

Anyway, I went to see it on my 15th birthday so it was the first 15 rated film I ever saw at the cinema (legally) so it will always be a special film for me

The opening of Skull is fine, I thought the 50s setting was great and I didn't actually mind the fridge nuking as much as some, I liked Blanchetts villain too.

After that though it goes rapidly downhill, the ants, comedy gophers, Tarzan, Mutt (who decides that was a good name?), Ray Winstone, aliens, UFOs....the first part of the film is Spielberg and all the better for it, unfortunately it seems to me that he then handed over the reins to Lucas and that's where it all went wrong!

Too much CGI (hello George), the change to aliens instead of religion... Hurt should have been playing Abnar....

Obviously your own tastes and opinion but Raiders scores only .5 more than Skull.
Never in a million years. That puts them more or less on a par with each other.
Sorry but that's an insult to the classic that is Raiders of the Lost Ark.

No need to apologise! Raiders is good, but I think it suffers from some pacing problems, which Skull doesn't. They're supposed to be adventure films.

Having said that, I don't think any of them are particularly outstanding films.

My rank

1. Temple of Doom
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
3. Last Crusade
4. Crystal Skull

Top three I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen them.

Crystal Skull seen twice.

"Did poor"?

It brought in over $474 million on a budget of 48 million (Wikipedia), and currently scores 89% (critics) & 91% (audience) at Rotten Tomatoes.

Maybe I'm weird but I enjoyed 'Temple' - yeah, it had some silly bits but what about the runaway mine cart bit that looked like a cool rollercoaster?

Anyway, my scores would be...
Raiders 8
Temple 6
Last Crusade 10
Skulls 6.

To be honest there is nothing intrinsically wrong with Temple. In terms of story, set pieces, iconic moments etc. it is a perfect Indiana Jones film. The mauling it used to get was mainly down to the addition of two things that weren't in Raiders:

1) An irritating, smart-arse kid
2) A pathetic, screeching woman

If they had just kept to some combination of Marion, Brody and Sallah or at least characters in that vein then it would have had a much better reputation throughout the years. For Last Crusade they ditched the annoying characters, brought back the classic characters and everything was ok.

Of course, when you compare Temple with the latest abomination, Ke Quan and Capshaw are up there with Al Pacino and Diane Keaton in The Godfather so, with hindsight it is one of the greatest films ever made.

It's an excellent movie, and is a perfect way to end the series.

Ignore the 4th film.

Last Crusade is the best film in the series imo. My interest didnt drop at any point, either intrigue or barnstorming action. Brilliant from start to finish and too good a way to finish for the fourth installment to stand any chance of topping it.

really ? I think its one of the leanest films ever made , Indy just gets on with it , it's one of its greatest charms , the energy in that movie is just terrific .

It can't match the pure magic of 'Raiders', but then what can? That film broke a lot of ground cinematically. In some ways, it suffers from being to familiar to 'Raiders'(same sort of search for religious artifact, chase scene with the tank trying to out-do the truck chase in the original film). However, I do think it was the best Indy sequel. The father-son relationship again was good. Plus, having Sean Connery in it was an inspired piece of casting. Great that they managed to get the old characters of Marcus and Sallah back again. Julian Glover made an interesting villain of sorts and I liked the final end sequence with having to do the trials to get the grail and help out Henry Snr. It would have made a good ending to the series.

I just ordered the first 3 on steelbook, 15 a pop though. I think it will be a 4000 print for each copy, so not willing to wait for a price reduction.

Agreed. Raiders is probably the best-paced action film I've ever seen.

This is what spoilt it for me. The first three films had their fantasy elements - but the stunts etc were grounded in realism and were for the most part, believable.

Crystal Skull just went too far, pushing the boundaries of realism and used far too much CGI for totally unnecessary things (monkeys, ants, prairie dogs etc)
