I'm not sure when Reader's Digest stopped issuing these but I found a this one today for a low price in a local charity shop. Most of these RD releases were from the RCA and CBS catalogues but this is the first one I have seen from the Pye records catalogue between 1965 and 1970. It seems to date from 1971 or slightly later, as the box contains promotions for other releases and all prices are in decimal currency, introduced in February 1971.

The title is "Max Bygraves presents - Wonderland of Sound", but on closer inspection most of the material is not by him. There are 9 LPs with 144 tracks, all in excellent condition and featuring material by :-

Petula Clark (a full LP),
Sandie Shaw,
Mungo Jerry,
Joe Dolan,
Long John Baldry.
Status Quo,
Jackie Trent,
Tony Hatch,
Kenny Ball,
England World Cup Squad 1970,
Sounds Orchestral,
Cyril Stapleton Orchestra (the "Power Game" theme is not on this set - the one I really wanted)
Pickettywitch,
The Foundations
and some others.

One LP is a selection of songs by Max Bygraves.

So for £2 not a bad buy and the records are good quality pressings on thick vinyl, rather better than other Pye pressings I have (including A&M and Warner Brothers releases).

Why they didn't cover a slightly wider period and include other artists signed to Pye such as Lonnie Donegan, Donovan, The Searchers, The Honeycombs, The Kinks, Julie Grant - I don't know.

It even includes a small paper disc stroboscope to check the turntable speeds are correct at 33 and 45 rpm.
