Asking for a small chips then once the portion is served asking to make them large. The chipper will probably serve a larger portion than if you asked for large chips originally since you're standing in front of him observing the difference between large and small, he may well be more generous (I often find chippers can vary their portion sizes at random).

Local Indian gives a free poppadom with each takeaway so placing two different orders (if you're ordering for two) may mean an extra poppadom or two than if you ordered it in one go.

I observed a woman in the chinese takeaway asking for extra peas in her special fried rice So next time I will ask for extra peas, prawns, egg and pork

I guess the trouble is that most people find a local takeaway they reallly like and will go there often

The proprietors will soon get wise to any tricks and think you're a ****. Better to be normal, loyal and frequent customers, and you'll get little favours and extras by default.

All a bit desperate isn't it? Few extra chips or an extra poppadom? Wow.

We didnt have to ask in Burger King
i ordered a kids meal Burger,Chips, drink and a toy and when we checked the order we had another portion of chips we asked about it and the server said "i didnt think you wanted the toy" (i didnt) so that was very nice

and the Mcdonalds monopoly Millions instant wins are good at getting some free food
Once in Mcdonalds my dad used a voucher which didnt have a key on the till so the lady got confused and when we checked we had an extra big mac and chips (we didnt know untill we got home and was late when we did find out)

I ordered a family bucket from KFC only to get home and find they's forgotten to put the chips in. I rang up to complain, put the chicken in the oven to keep warm, and went back for the chips -about 5 mins away. When I got there, the manager had redone the whole order for free.

KFC are very good. Our family bucket was short a piece of chicken. I rang them they took my name and address for next time I went and gave me a free bucket.

Quite. All a bit sad. Especially given that many takeaways are small businesses, not large chains, often family-run. Seems very mean-spirited.

Although on the other hand if the people in the shop know your a loyal and fequent customer they might give you less food as they know you are going to come back anyway, therefore are saving themselves money by giving you less food

Pretty much the response I was going to make myself, you would have to be pretty hard up if you went to the trouble of splitting your order into two separate orders just to get a free poppadom worth about 30 pence.

The only personal experience I recall that is vaguely related to this topic, was a fried chicken shop about 10 years ago. I'd finished a late shift (work in the pub trade) and went in after work for a late snack. As they were just about to close and had quite a bit of food left under the hot counter, I think they offered me a deal to clear the lot. It was something quite ridiculous, like 50 Hot Wings for about £2.50.

Still, £2.50 more than they would have got had I not turned up and they had thrown them away. That being said, I certainly have not spent the last 10 years stalking chicken shops at 2am just on the offchance I can get a similar deal again!

I haven't done any of the stuff I mentioned, but if one can maximise their portion at no extra cost then what's the problem? There's nothing decpetive or sinister about it.

As for the comment made regarding takeaways being local, how's a few extra peas gonna put them out of business? lol

Maybe not put them out of business, but surely there is a cost to the business attached to the peas, so any given away over and above the usual recipe are a loss to the business. If they were to do this for every customer, that will eventually add up to a lot of peas.

Mere trifles. They can always request extra payment if that's ever the case. It works both ways too - I used to request a curry meat specifically minus the green peppers and onions which were included as standard.

A few weeks ago I ordered a doner meat and chips from the kebab shop and they demanded extra payment for salad, although his colleague told him to just give a small bit. Everytimre I've ordered this meal in the past I've always been asked for salad as standard. I thought it was quite cheap of them given salad is relatively trivial in a kebab shop environment - customers not always utilising their salad option etc

If everyone did it, the prices would go up.

So an innocent request for extra peas in special fried rice is blamed for the rising cost of living and global austerity....
